There are different types of crowns: metal/gold crowns, metal fused to porcelain and full porcelain crowns. They all have advantages and disadvantages. The best one will depend on the circumstances in which they are required in the mouth.
Usually gold crowns are strongest for biting against, full porcelain are usually the most cosmetic, and porcelain fused to metal are somewhere in between (as a general rule)
