I Was Fitted With A Metal Crown And Now I Have Dry Mouth. Can I Get A Porcelain Crown Through The NHS?
Q.
Hello, Dr. Moore I have a problem that I hope you can help me with. I have had to have my porcelain crown fitted with metal crown on a molar at the back because I was told the NHS does not allow for a porcelain one. I am now finding that I am suffering from a weird dryness and numbness in the mouth and tongue and think that I am intolerant to the metal crown. It has been suggested that I have oral candida but I show no signs of these symptoms. Can I have it replaced with a porcelain one and how much is the cost under NHS? Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer me.

Hello and thank you for your enquiry. I don’t think the crown would cause these symptoms but maybe get your dentist to check it and give you a quote for a porcelain crown which will need to be paid for privately in most cases as it’s considered a cosmetic procedure. Most clinics have prices lists on their websites. I hope this helps to answer your question. Best wishes, Dr Andrew Moore.
