Q. I had a filling put in my very back tooth about 6 weeks ago. Ever since then I keep a terrible aching in jaw whenever I chew, although the pain is under a tooth that was not fixed. It is actually under a crown. It is sensitive to hot and cold. I went back to the dentist this week and he adjusted the bite, but it is still causing some pretty terrible aching pain. HELP! The dentist did an xray and said everything looked fine for all the teeth on that side.,
A. It sounds like the start of an abscess, this doesn’t show on an x-ray at first try to get it fixed asap

Q. Hi, I currently have a white composite veneer on my Upper Left 1 tooth as a result of the tooth darkening from an incident at school where I bumped my tooth on my knee. I am 21 and a trainee dental nurse, although I do have straight teeth it bothers me when i see that my two front teeth do not match and i am seriously considering my options for veneers etc… What would be the best way around this for me? Would I be best getting two matching veneers because the tooth with the composite veneer is higher up in my gum than the other? I would like for them to match perfectly because from having braces for years when younger I can’t stand that im not happy with my teeth! Am i best using the Dental Practice I work at or going to a cosmetic surgery and paying that bit extra? thank you ,
,
A. I would advise a consultation with a cosmetic dentist you are best to have 2 veneers done the dentist can also reshape your gums (crown lenghening)this would then give you a perfect match.

Q. Hi, I have been to see 2 seperate dentists about getting veneers fitted. They have both said it is not possible as I have a lot of enamel loss and in taking away a layer of the tooth it may hit a nerve. I am still really keen to get veneers; can you please advise if what I have been told is correct? And if so if there is anyway around it? I look forward to hearing from you. Kind Regards,
A. You could consider Lumineers they are very similar to veneers but they have minimal tooth preparation. your only other option would be to have ceramic / porcelain crowns. I am happy to see you for a consultation please feel free to contact the clinic.

Q. good evening, I am writing to you from Lebanon (Middle East) my father is in his late 70s he lost his teeth except for 2 in the back of his upper jaw and 4 in the middle of the lower jaw which were treated.what is the best way applied in terms of implants for people in his age knowing that his dentist said that he has still good bone structure. thanks,
A. It sounds like an implant retained denture might be the simplest and most cost effective way of treating him. I’m not sure what you can get in Lebanon but if you ask around you might be able to find a dentist who can do this for you, if not you may need to travel?

Q. Hi, my two front teeth are slightly longer than the others, one of them is slightly higher than the other its like they are over lapping.my dentist has told me that teeth to tend to move and that if it was fixed it may happen again. I would like a second opinion thats why I have contacted you. And also would it be possible to shorten my two front teeth so that they are the same as the rest of my teeth? kind regards.
,
A. There is a brace called the inman aligner it is designed for your anterior teeth only this could solve the problem for your front teeth, the treatment takes up to 12 weeks and cost approx £1500.00. It is normal for your front teeth to be longer than the others but your dentist can shorten them by a fraction and maybe put a curve on the edges of your teeth to make them slighter more femine. I am happy to take a look please feel free to contact the surgery.

Q. Hi, I have a fear of dentists and have not been to a dentist for nearly 20 years. I need to have a few fillings put in but the main problem is that i have two teeth at the back of my mouth that have rotten completely down to the gum? I think I have finally built the courage to go visit a dentist, but am still worried to what they would do to my two rotten teeth? Could you share some light regards.
,
A. Thank you for your enquiry. Depending how far the decay has gone in your back teeth depends on whether we can save them. If they have to be removed you could fill the gaps with
dental implants, without taking a look it is difficult to diagnose. Please feel free to contact the clinic for a consultation.

Q. hi my teeths are very far from each other and i have one cavity teeth also iam in my 20s so what procedure suits for me? my front teeths have too much gap i try to hide my smile because of it .if i get the tretment how much it costs?,
A. Orthodontics would most probably be the best option for you. There are several different types of braces without a consultation it would be difficuilt to advise which one would best suit you. The cost for braces starts from £1500.00

Q. Hello, I have 2 questions: 1. About 4 years ago I had a tooth removed near the back of my mouth and replaced with a gold one. I would now like to have the gold one removed and replaced with a white one, would a NHS dentist do this for me and how much would it cost? 2. One of my front lower teeth is much further back than my other teeth, would it be possible to have it removed and the subsequent gap filled or have it pushed forward? Again, is this a private dentist matter and how much would it cost? Thanks for your time.,
A. I think you would struggle to get this done on the NHS as they would class it has cosmetic. You would have to contact a NHS dentist to ask the question.

Q. I had my teeth cleaned and the dental hygenist was really rough. Could she have caused my upper bridge to come out?,
A. The hygienist wouldn’t cause the bridge to come loose. The hygienist would only dislodge the bridge if it had already debonded one the of the teeth holding it in. It should be straight forward for your dentist to re-cement it back in.

Q. I am looking for a solution to the problems with my teeth and can’t decide the best route. When I was younger I was told I only needed braces for cosmetic reasons, then after I turned 18 I was told I would actually need them. I only have 2 crooked teeth that affect 4 teeth at the front of my mouth. could you advise me on the best/cost effective solution?,
A. Braces will still be the best option for you if you have healthy teeth as anything more destructive such as veneers, will leave you worse off in the future

Q. I know this is long, but I will extremely appreciate your time to read it. I’m only sixteen years old so I don’t really know what I am doing, however I do know that I desperately want a nice smile. I would like to know: Is there any age range on this aspect of cosmetic surgery or is it ok that I am sixteen? Also through the NHS I have been told that they will not do any surgery to correct my teeth because it isn’t a health risk, they have offered the choice of braces, however I am starting collage in September and don’t particuarly want to arrive with a mouth full of metal, also i understand that braces will take upto 2 years for correction. I really don’t want this doing and no dentists will seem to help me understand my other options, I have; an overbite, gaps mainly between my front upper teeth and my bottom jaw is slightly further back. Is there any surgery I can have to correct all these matters rather than a brace? It has come to the point where I saving up my money for this, and I will pay any price to be able to laugh without covering my mouth, and talk to the floor to avoid people seeing my teeth. I know you probably get thousands of emails, but please will you write back with some advice, thank you.,
A. Surgery can be perfomed to reset your lower jaw you would have see a specialist orthodontist for a consultation. As for the braces there are different types which can be offered to you privately such as the
invisalign (invisable braces)or the 6 month smile (fixed brace with ceramic brackets no metal)You could attend college with these and no body would know.

Q. Dear Dr Solanki – My wife (32) has suffered in the past with bilemia (from 13 to approx 25 yrs old), and this has caused her terrible probelms with her teeth. She has lost most of her back teeth and her front teeth are very weak with fillings and cracked in places, which to some extent has caused her to be depressed resulting in mild return of the eating disorder. She/we are on benefits (child tax credits) but we both are also working and she holds an NHS card – we unfortunately just cannot afford to have the neccessary dental work done, quoted at £7k, can you please give us any advice on how and if we could recieve and help from the NHS or where we might find treatment cheaper?,
A. The only way you would recieve free dental treatment is through a NHS dentist, they will be able to help and restore her teeth for her. I would register with a NHS dentist.

Q. Hi, I don’t really know where to start, but i’m extremely down about my teeth

i’m 19 and just don’t know what to do, I feel the problems with them may be too big to sort. When I was younger I had to have
root canal treatment on a front tooth, this left it very grey, I have since had a crown but they still don’t look right. Also, my bottom teeth became very rotten so i’ve had lots of work done on them, but they look awful as the white fillings I had are becoming discoloured. My teeth are far from straight, they all seem to be different colours. I just don’t understand it because i’ve always looked after them, but my dad had a lot of problems with his teeth & so has my mum. This is beginning to rule my life, I think about how hideous my teeth look 24/7. I saved up £400 to have this crown done which looks awful. I just don’t know where to turn, but at the age of 19 i’m not willing to live the rest of my life like this. So if you have an advice i’d be extremely grateful, i’m willing to save up any amount of money, no matter how long it takes. I also have pictures but not sure how to attach them on here. Thank you in advance.,
A. Its sounds like you’re starting to get things sorted out with the front crown. I guess in the future you will need all the other teeth crowning so I would carry on in the direction you’re going.
