Wednesday, April 7th, 2010
Q.
Hi, im 22 years old. I was wondering if you could give me some advice about my teeth, my two front teeth are bigger than the rest and one overlaps the other. They are also bumpy across the bottom of the tooth.I hate it so much that i dont go out very much and i never have my photo taken as i feel people are staring at my teeth. Would i need cosmetic dentistry or braces or what would you suggest? I live in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne. Thanks.,

I suffer from serious sinus infections because my tooth broke off, any advice?

Friday, April 2nd, 2010
Q.
I had a tooth pulled that broke off, after the tooth was dug out and I returned home I noticed the hole looked white and I could suck air thru the hole. I had the dentist look at it and he did a graft, well the graft didn’t work. I went back last week I asked him to pack it before he stitched it he said no and cut it and stitched it together. Well he removed the stitches today and i can still suck air thru it. What can I do to get this taken care of it has been almost 2 years since the original tooth, I have gotten serious sinus infections and dont know where to turn. Can you offer any advise?,

How often do titanium posts break?

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010
Q.
About 2 years ago, I had a crown on one of my front tooth. It had a titanium post as a part of the buildup. About a year after, I noticed that the tooth was getting loose. I complained to the doctor and was told that it looked like the root was getting loose. …about a month ago the tooth had broken. Upon an examination, it was determined that the root was fine, but the titanium post was broken. My question is: assuming titanium posts a very durable, how often do they break, if ever. Thank You, Mark,
A.
It is rare but they can break

I have limited funding but reallyn eed my teeth fixing, please help!

Monday, March 29th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr.Caplan. Firstly thank you so much for offering this service. I am a 51 year old man (but I only look 50!). I have had a very bad history with my teeth. A while ago I went to a private dentist and paid around a thousand pounds to have all the non-cosmetic work donew that my teeth needed. I subsequently ran out of money to have the considerable cosmetic work done that I would really like to. I have been to two NHS dentists since then and both just gave me quick check-up and sent me on my way. The state of my teeth caused me serious psychological problems. Wherever I go I do not feel like part of, ‘the real world’. I feel like an outsider in any social situation. I see people everywhere naturally smiling in every social encounter. This has has had crushing effect on my self-esteem, even though I am an intelligent and caring person with a lot to give. A relationship with a woman whilst my teeth look as they do is out of the question. I wrote a long letter to my doctor about this problem. She simply gave me the name of a local dentist that was taking on patients. This dentist was the one who just sent me away after a check-up, despite two of my crowns being cracked and other teeth in a very bad state. I need quite a lot of cosmetic surgery which there is now way I can pay for all in one go . I am prepared to pay as much as I can towards putting things right but I couldn’t pay, say, several thousand pounds at once. I have very bad and desparate feelings in myself, as my bad teeth have become so much part of my identity, I can hardly bear to look in the mirror, or sometimes go to work as I have to face many people every day. Is there no way that any dentist, or the NHS could help me, for the first time in my life at 51, to have a smile just good enough to interact in everyday situations? It’s very difficult to get past a dental receptionist to explian this situation. I hope you can answer me and at least get me one step forward, before I get to 52! Kind regards and all the best .

Q.
Hi My two bottom front teeth aren’t straight or next to each other and as such don’t look good. I did look at invisalign but for just this correction it seemed very expensive and took too long! Can I get veneers on bottom teeth? Thanks,

I have many dental problems due to gingivitis, can you recommend any treatment?

Monday, March 29th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Caplan I had aggressive gingivitis which has been made worse by smoking. I had my gums thoroughly cleaned and was told to stop smoking. After a few months, I reverted back to smoking and my gums became worse. I’ve recently been the dentist and had my teeth cleaned and am on corsodyl mouthwash to help my gums. I have reasonably good oral care, but my gums have been damaged. There are a few small, but noticeable, gaps between some of my teeth which have formed because of the gum receeding. I’ve stopped smoking and am finishing the prescription of corsodyl. My teeth have been badly stained by smoking. I wanted to know if you thought whether teeth whitening was an option or is it too dangerous given my gum problems to date? I know home teeth whitening kits don’t recommend people with gum problems to use them, but would professional whitening be possible? I would also be open to the possiblity of restorative cosmetic surgery? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I’m only in my late 20’s and not being able to smile or laugh without feeling really self-conscious about my teeth and gums is having a huge impact on my self-confidence and my life in general. Many thanks.,
