i have vertical crack on my 18 molar is efficacy of bonded and nonbonded amalgam be an alternative

Friday, June 19th, 2009
Q.
My dentist said I have a vertical crack on my #18 molar. It runs from the top to the gumline down the middle on the back of the tooth. I don’t feel any pain. Sometimes I feel sensitivity when I chew something. I don’t like the idea of a root canal and crown and I did research and found this article: EFFICACY OF BONDED AND NONBONDED AMALGAM IN THE TREATMENT OF TEETH WITH INCOMPLETE FRACTURES Would this be an alternative. It seems like it would entail less removal of material if a dentist could just used an adhesive bonded restorative material like amalgam or other metal.

I had a sharp shooting pain in a molar with some sensitivity what would be the reason

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009
Q.
Hi I would really appreciate your help. This afternoon I was having a cold drink when I experienced a sharp shooting pain in a molar I had filled a few months ago. I also experienced some sensitivity in another filled molar but not to the same extent. All this was accompained by a general ache in my teeth. This morning I had no pain and drank cold drinks with no problem, do you have any idea why the pain suddenly came on just a few hours later? I chewed a lot of gum today which I haven’t done for a year or so. Could I have chipped the filling? I checked in the mirror and there doesn’t appear to be any holes but maybe I missed them? I don’t really have the time or money to go to the dentist this week but I am desperate to sort this problem as it is my birthday this weekend. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you

I tried whitening my teeth and now the teeth are extremely sensitive what do you advise

Q.
Hello Dr Patel, I needed my crown replacing as the old one had cracked & I decided to whiten my teeth first. My dentist provided the tooth whitener & trays. My teeth were so extremely sensitive after a couple of tries it was unbearable. My dentist said she had never experienced a patient with such sensitivity, she advised me to only use it once or twice a week, also to put sensodyne toothpaste into the trays & leave it in overnights. Eventually I had to give it up after using 6 ampoules. My teeth seemed to settle down a bit so I had the temorary crown placed & started suffering with extreme sensitivity to all my teeth, from cold only, I put up with it for 2 weeks then had the new crown put in. That was nearly 4 weeks ago & the pain carries on. I have noticed it worsens when I have to use a nasal spray for hayfever ( beconase ) or a decongestant. In the last few days apart from all the zinging in my teeth, also feeling like I am biting on tin foil, there is a bit of a dull ache in the crowned tooth. I keep hoping this will all settle down on it’s own, but am beginning to wonder if I should go back to my dentist, what do you advise ? Thank you

Is it possible to have just a crown on my tooth without a root canal? can it cover half the teeth

Thursday, May 21st, 2009
Q.
Hello Dr. Moore: I went to the dentist yesterday and told him I had an occasional sensitive feeling in my lower left molar when I chewed certain food like a piece of muscle in meat. He took a look at the molar and said there was a vertical fracture in the back of the molar that went to the gumline. He said it probably needed a crown. I knew nothing about crowns, so when I researched on the internet it says that usually the perform a root canal on a cracked tooth before putting on a crown. Is it possible to put just a crown on my tooth without a rootcanal? Also, I read that porcelain crowns tend to cause unequal biting pressure on the opposite side tooth causing quicker wear. So I was thinking the best kind of crown would be a high noble metal crown. Is a high noble metal crown gold? One other question, does a crown have to cover the entire tooth down to the gumline or can it just cover like half or 3/4 of the entire tooth?
