What Choices Are Available To Me, Regarding A Cracked Tooth?

Friday, June 14th, 2013
Q.

Hi Doctor Patel. I wondered if you could help me? Unfortunately, I have cracked one of my teeth (bottom row, right at the back). The crack is across the top of the tooth but it is not causing me any pain at the moment. I know if I don’t get it seen to it could become infected or it may even die.  I have made a dentist appointment but I wanted to know what choices should be available to me? I would like to know because I know cosmetic work can be quite costly. So I need to know how much money I am likely to be paying. I also work, so it would be great to know how many appointments I’ll have to make in order to have this problem fixed. Thank you for your time.

Since My Veneers Were Fitted I Have Been In Agony, Is This Normal?

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2013
Q.

I have had 15 veneers 8 top and 7 bottom and have been in fairly severe pain with the bottoms from the start in each tooth and this gets worse at night when I lie down although maybe this is because of extended time without pain relief…. it has been 4 weeks since the teeth were ground down for the temps and 2 weeks since the veneers were fitted and I cannot go a day without fairly heavy pain killer doses..I did have a tooth extracted on the bottom but the pain is not in this area..thanks in advance for any advice.

A Tooth That I Had Root Canal Treatment On 15 Years Ago Fell Out, What Do I Do?

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013
Q.

Hi I wonder if you can help . I had root canal treatment on one of my teeth( I think it was the 3rd one in from the front tooth) around 15 years ago. Everything has been fine up until now with it. I had quite a shock as last night the whole tooth fell out in one piece including two metal posts which are attached to what I presume is a crown . It was such a long time ago I can’t actually remember what treatment I received! It is quite a mystery, anyways obviously I am now very upset to see a gap at the side where the tooth was . Will I be able to just have this replaced by my dentist or will I need a dental implant or worse ?? It could become quite an issue for me if I do not get it fixed so I say, thank you your help would be much appreciated .

I Had A Crown On A Twisted Tooth Now It Is Infected And Causing Pain, Should I Have Had Root Canal Treatment Beforehand?

Monday, March 4th, 2013
Q.

Hi,

My front tooth was very twisted so had some by drilling some of the tooth away and a crown, which looks much better. This was done privately as it was for cosmetic reasons. About 18months later I have had pain and infections but doesnt show up on X-rays. I have been suffering with this for about a year as the dentist just kept saying clean better as there is a pocket that food can get into. I clean thoroughly and regularly and it doesnt help and am still suffering. I was given antibiotics eventually but it didnt work at alll. I have continual pain and much discomfort when I speak. The dentist has recommended specialist root canal treatment but he said due to the very thin root he cannot do it himself. I am normaly an NHS patient so this is becoming very expensive for me. This makes me question should I have been given root canal treatment before the crown?

I would very much appreciate your help.  Thank you.

I have received a lot of dental treatment recently that has left me in a lot of pain, do I now need to seek further treatment?

Thursday, December 6th, 2012
Q.

Hi,
Back in April, I managed to break a back molar (second back top left) All wisdom teeth removed several years ago.
The tooth is directly above a gold crown.
The tooth required root canal treatment and a crown.
I had a silver crown fitted originally, which caused a severe metallic reaction, and was changed for a porcelain crown.
The first split on fitting, and the second has now been in place since August.
The tooth feels very large and bulges out on both sides.
It is very uncomfortable rather than painful, but I am constantly aware of it’s presence, rubbing my gum and tongue.
There is a throbbing sensation, and as I say, and constant awareness of it.
Whilst receiving treatment, the dentist said I had errosion to my two front teeth and applied a substance over them, which is rough, and also has a groove on the top of the left front tooth, and they kind of click. when I talk and eat.
I have not needed any dental treatment for twenty years, and have had this tratment leaving me feeling as though my mouth is not my own.
Given the trouble and time spent on sorting this (I had to take lots of time off work) I would welcome your opinion if its something I have to put up with, or seek further trattment.
Thank You

Is having root canal treatment part of the process of replacing a crown?

Thursday, December 6th, 2012
Q.

Dear Dr Hughes,

I really need an advise and hopefully you would be willing to help.
I have a crown placed 16 years ago and now it has to be replaced. I went for a consultation and my dentist told me that before replacing the crown, he has to do the root canal treatment because what I have is not long enough, :-/ Is this a common process of replacing a crown?? I find his reason not convincing enough, please give me an advise what to do best, because I really need to replace my old crown the soonest, it’s starting to break little bit.
thanks.

Best regards,

Could dental bridge damage or rot other teeth in my mouth?

Friday, November 30th, 2012
Q.

Hi,i had to have a tooth extraction after root canal treatment as i had a hairline crack in my root.I’m considering a dental bridge but have been advised that it can damage or rot the other teeth that it attaches to..is this correct? Also would it start to pull the teeth that it attaches to inwards? Help! I’m wary and nervous now, dont wont to harm any other teeth…also do i have to take bridge out to ensure adequate brushing and cleaning or does the bridge stat in place whilst brushing?

Can I make my teeth better without harming the tooth surface?

Friday, November 30th, 2012
Q.

Hello! I’m 17 and I have bad teeth. I had my root canal done on the front tooth (it hurt sometimes, not sure if It’s normal). I’m emarrassed to go to the dentist because I’m too young to have such bad teeth..I really like the shape of my teeth, but they’re not white…actually, I’m kind of obsessed with my teeth and I don’t feel comfortable. Also they are demineralized so my dentist told me that I’ll never be able to do the teeth whitening. Hope you can help me! Is there any chance that MY teeth can be beautiful without any veneer or drilling the surface (enamel). Please help me!

I keep needing root canals after getting dental crowns. What should I do?

Friday, November 30th, 2012
Q.

A year ago I had crowns on 5 upper front teeth replaced (solely cosmetic reasons originally). 2 of these subsequently need root canals. Just prior to this it was discovered that another 2 of these crowned teeth needed root canal re-treatment. During the last month or so, one of these (re-treated) crowns on a canine tooth has developed a \’lip\’, into which I can insert the tip of my fingernail. When I floss or use an oral irrigator I have now noticed a smell. The dentist xrayed the tooth but says there is nothing wrong with it but will replace it. I am loathe to do this due to all the recent problems I have had and yet more trauma to this tooth, & which , with every crown replacement, is fitted higher and higher up into the gum. On the other hand I don\’t want to forever have bad breath!! What would you advise? Is there any way this margin around the gumline/crown can be filled? Thank you
