Is it really necessary for my back 4 molars to be extracted?

Wednesday, October 31st, 2012
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes, my teeth are in really bad shape and recently I decided it was time I did something about it.I made an appointment with a local dentist who after examining them told me that I would have to have four of my teeth extracted. They are two upper Molars and two lower Molars. The teeth have decayed badly over the years so I didn’t question his decision but I am wondering whether there is any way that the teeth can be saved even though two of them are barely visible. What question should I put to the dentist so that he may consider an alternative to complete extraction? Could he transfer me to a specialist to see if they can be saved?

How can I get rid of my black gum line?

Friday, October 19th, 2012
Q.

Hiya, I chipped my front tooth 5 years ago and had root canal treatment on it and they then filled my tooth up but it started going black so my dentist suggested a crown. From day one my crown has had a black line above it and my gum area above my tooth is black. I had fluid coming out of my gum so I went to see my dentist which referred me to a dental school in Aberdeen, they sent me back to my dentists and instructed him to take my crown off and leave it open and put a temporary crown on and redo root treatment. I had a new crown put on in august but my gum is still black. Can anything be done to get the dark colour away from my gum area? and why has it turned that colour?

Is the pain I am having because of a root infection?

Wednesday, October 10th, 2012
Q.

A 20 year old filling dropped out of my upper molar. Since being screwed and refilled I have had severe pain on and off most days for a year.My dentist keeps saying it is gum infection but there is no sign of inflammation or rot after all this time and even if I don’t eat on that side, eating can be excruciating for ten minutes and then the pain will completely disappear, and return sometime throughout the day, often without eating or drinking anything.Been using Cortisol soaked brushes mouthwash and toothpaste all this time but my dentist just won’t reason that it could be something else.
Could the screws be touching a nerve maybe? Do I need a root canal? Sometimes the pain goes right up to the base of my eye socket, and I am convinced that gum infection would not feel like this.I never had gum problems before the filling dropped out, and yet I am supposed to believe that I have now from the very first day after the new filling onwards for a year now.
Your advice would be greatly appreciated, I am 62.

Am I suitable for bridges? Will they be better for me than dental implants?

Friday, September 14th, 2012
Q.

Hi, i was born with a few missing teeth, so I have braces now, so they can arrange the teeth that i already have to be put in their right places. I can’t wait to finally have that beautiful smile and healthy mouth that iv always wanted. Now i have 2 choices either bridges or implants. I defiantly want bridges but on the bottom part of my teeth and on the front part, i have 4 missing teeth all in one row, but i do have teeth on each side but in the middle their are 4 missing so can i have bridges and if yes will it be good for me and well basically work well?

My front tooth has turned grey following root canal treatment, what would you recommend for this problem?

Monday, September 3rd, 2012
Q.

Hello, I hope you are well, so here is my problem: I have a greying front tooth following root canal treatment, a few months ago. I have received conflicting information from several dentists when I have asked what to have done about it. Some of them have recommended that I have a veneer, others say I should try internal bleaching, or crown treatment. As it is my front tooth I want to be sure I select the best treatment, I understand that this is a cosmetic treatment so just wondered what you would personally recommend for this problem?

I have been suffering from tooth pain for around 4 years now after having root canal surgery, what’s causing this problem?

Thursday, August 30th, 2012
Q.

Hello,  i have suffered from tooth pain in my left side canine tooth for about 4 years, which was treated with antibiotics but the pain never went. 2-3 years ago I had a root canal performed on it, since I still experience pain and i have told my dentist several times he gives x-rays every time but says there’s nothing wrong, the tooth has dullness now and looks rather awful, and i now experience pain in the canine but on the right side also it’s very similar pain, but not as agonising. I’m fed up of my dentist I feel fobbed off constantly, I’m wondering if I should demand to be referred to hospital regarding it. I’d be really grateful for your opinion. Thank you.

Should I have the nerve in my tooth ‘killed’ before the tooth dies?

Friday, August 24th, 2012
Q.

Good morning. I’ve had a porcelain crown on my front tooth for the last 25 years. It has now broken so I need to get it replaced. When I originally had the crown done it was on top of a vital tooth. My dentist said I could either leave the tooth as it is which could cause problems later on as the tooth could die or I could have the nerve ‘killed’ before fixing my new porcelain crown. I’ve had no tooth pain to date with my existing crown and I’m not sure which option is better. Please advise. Many thanks

Q.

Hi there iv just had the first stage of root canal on the left lower side of my mouth 4th tooth from the front, iv got a temporary filling in at the moment untill me next appointment in 1 week iv been careful in trying not to eat that side and being carfull also when I brush, but this morning about 1/4 of the tooth broke off on the inside it is a very small part but I am slightly worried that it will have to be removed even though I’m sure that’s not the case I would like to be reassured, will I still be able to get a crown fitted even though a small part broke off and shall I try to get my appointment moved forward instead of leaving it another week I don’t eat more to fall of, iv had root canal befor but this problem didn’t ocoure ? Should I try and save my tooth by going ahead with root canal treatment?

Thursday, June 28th, 2012
Q.

Dear Andrew,

I saw my dentist to-day who confirmed that I have a tooth abscess. I am taking antibiotics, the pain has been simply awful. It is a lower canine. My options are: root canal or extraction. The tooth itself has no decay. As I have advanced gum disease (I have regular hygiene treatment), the gum is quite receded and this particular tooth has grade 1 to grade2 mobility. Deep down, I don’t like to think of the possible loss of the tooth, I work diligently on my dental hygiene. Having said that, financially I would only be able to afford the root canal on the tooth and not a crown and I think of the possible future brittleness of the tooth, although a crown was not mentioned. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated. One moment I think – extraction – problem gone, the next I think, root canal – try to save the tooth. Long message, but thank you again Andrew.
