Will root canal treatment make my teeth break even more?

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009
Q.
Hi there, I have two very broken front teeth (on the bottom) which have looked awful every time I smile for years. Now they are starting to go grey so they look awful! They don’t hurt most of the time, one hurts when it gets cold but not all the time. The dentist has said I need root canal even though there is no evidence of infection etc and xray is clear. This tooth keeps breaking more every week. I am not bothered about undergoing pain but I want to get BOTH teeth looking nice and not half the size of every other front tooth. What would you suggest? Surely root canal will make them break even more?

What are the pros and cons of having posts added to root canals?

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having posts added to root canals? If it is not absolutely necessary, would it be wiser to wait? At what age do dentists start advising people to add posts? I have had a few front crowns for a few decades now. Thanks!!

Can you tell if a root canal is a failure by an xray?

Q.
Can you tell if a root canal is a failure by an xray? Also would there ever be a case where a root canal specialist would not give a shot to numb the area before they explore during root canal?

After root canal tooth has broken partially can it be fixed?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q.
Rob, Over a year ago I received a root canal on an upper molar while I was in the US, but recently a quarter of the tooth has broken. I was wondering how much it would cost to fix the tooth? Thank you in advance.

Confused as I cannot find a reason for my smelly and rotting teeth.

Q.
I had a veneer on my lateral incisor around 4 years ago. Last year I noticed that the tooth was discoloured around the gum line and had a bad smell/taste and feeling of pressure – never pain. After several courses of antibotics my Dentist performed root treatment, twice as it was unsuccessful the first time. My tooth still smells and tastes bad and my dentist is baffled – any ideas? I think perhaps there is a gap between the veneer and my tooth and that the front shell of my tooth is rotting, could that be the case – is there anything can be done? Thanks

Need to know positive and negative of root canal treatment.

Q.
Hi I have been diagnosed with a cracked LL7 tooth, and have had a crown put on to stabilise it. We can’t tell if the crack has affected the root or pulp. 4 weeks on after the crown was fitted, I am still suffering grinding, aggressive pain all day in the tooth (though I can get some sleep at night). It’s more acute with hot and cold and sweet foods. I can just about use the tooth, but not to eat anything hard or crunchy, as this is uncomfortable too (though the crown has helped to make it less painful). I am taking painkillers every few hours and am not coping with being in pain all day. My dentist says it can take a few months for nerve pain to diminish after it’s been stirred up, but I can’t stand this kind of pain for much longer. It’s interfering with my quality of life. Would it be best to ask for a root canal to be performed on this tooth so that the pain situation is resolved? Presumably if this is done the tooth cannot hurt anymore? Does having root canal cause any longterm problems for a tooth?

Am I spending more than required for fixing my grinding problem?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q.
I have bridge that was replaced by my general dentist last year. Since then, I had a lot of problems because when the molar (#31) was grind down, it exposed the nerve. I had root canal done. However, after the rct, I was still having pain. The endodontist told me she was not able to get through one of the canals because it was blocked & curved. I went to another endodontist who recommended a retreatment. The tooth feels a little better, with some sensitivity. The bridge is always getting loose because there is not much tooth to hold the bridge. My dentist is recommending a crown lengthening. I am afraid I am spending too much money on this tooth, but would it really be worth it.
