I have an infection in my root after root canal treatment, what are my options?

Friday, June 18th, 2010
Q.
I had a root canal 2 years ago after an injury, but the dentist did manage to remove all the root and it become infected, and it took two further attempts to remove the root. I changed dentist after this, as I didnt feel confident with this particular surgeon. I later had further infection and was treated with antibiotics, and my new dentists suggested I go back to my original dentist, which I wan’t happy to do. I have pain and sensitivity when I have hot or cold drinks and try and bite into things. I have had further antibiotics but nothing has helped. What are my options?,

The tooth that had the root canal treatment is now decaying, what treatment options are available to me?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010
Q.
I have a front tooth which was replanted 30 years ago following an accident. It has had root canal treatment but is now decaying and my NHS dentist is about to either recommend a crown (NHS) or implant (private treatment). I am currently pregnant to must wait for the xray. What is the protocol on getting a second opinion and exploring the possibility of an implant specialist doing the work rather than my existing NHS dentist? If I consult a private clinic what would be the cost of a consultation and necessary xrays etc – and could I ask my own dentist for copies of x-rays?,

I have a discoloured tooth under my crown, why is this?

Thursday, June 17th, 2010
Q.
I have a gold crown in one of my molars and the tooth underneath is discoloured. I don’t know if I had root canal treatment in that tooth or not. It’s not yellow or grey, but an even, brown colour over the whole area that can be seen – is it likely to be just discolouration rather than decay? I don’t have any pain or problems with it. I’m going to have my dentist look at it in two weeks but I’m a very anxious patient so wondered if you could warn me what I might expect.,

Is it correct that I can’t receive a white filling through NHS dental treatment?

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010
Q.
Last year I had root canal treatment on one of my back teeth which was then filled with a white filling as an nhs treatment. Unfortunately, since the filling, each time I flossed the tape got caught and was extremely difficult to remove. I live 125 miles from my old dentist but recently have been lucky enough to finally get a new nhs dentist local to me. She took an x-ray of the tooth and said there was a problem. She drilled part of the tooth and filled it with a silver (amalgam?) filling. She told me that I couldn’t have a white filling on the nhs. Is that right? How come the other dentist gave me a white filling? Luckily the filling today was where it can’t be seen, but I need to have a temporary filling replaced that will be visible, will I have to pay for private treatment to get a white filling? Also, will the new filling gel with the older white filling, or will that tooth be weakened by the work she’s carried out? She also says you can’t have a scale and polish on the nhs – is this right? I’m sure my old dentist carried out this service. It’s taken 5 years to be able to get an nhs dentist where I live – the old one used to cost me £100 in travel costs so I can’t go back there anymore. I take good care of my teeth and rarely have to have treatment of any kind (that temporary filling was put in 7 years ago), so should I just pay up and shut up or can I insist she puts in a white filling? If you managed to get to the end of this query, I thank you for taking the time to read it and look forward to your reply.,

Friday, June 4th, 2010
Q.
I had a large feeling done on first molar about a year ago since then the tooth has been extremly sensitive. Last week I bit on hard nuts and a few days later the tooth became more sensitive then before. Went to dentists and xray shows nothing. The pain comes and goes when cold or hot anything touches it even air.. Some days it bothers me more then others. Does this sound like sensitivity or cracked tooth?,
