What sort of dentist should I see regarding my grinding problems?

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010
Q.
Hi, I have an overbite which I had a brace to treat when I was a teenager – It did work to a certain extent and I forgot about it til recently. I have terrible teeth and have several root canals, crowns, veneers and loads of fillings. A couple of different dentists have remarked to me that I must be a chronic tooth grinder, but I dont believe I do it during the day, and I can’t verify what happens at night because I live alone! Chips and chunks fall off my teeth all the time and crowns rarely last more than 6 months. It occurred to me recently that my bite only meets together on the left and that the “grinding” must be a symptom of the teeth constantly trying to find a comfortable position to rest in. Do you think this is a feasible reason for the poor condition of my teeth over the last few years ( I am 36). What sort of dentist should I see? Do you think I might need orthognathic surgery? Can you have orthodontics when several of my teeth are veneers/crowns? Please let me know, these teeth are getting me down!,

Do you need an orthodontist to alter and reshape the cement or can a dentist do it?

Wednesday, July 14th, 2010
Q.
Andrew, I have a bonded retainer on my upper teeth from orthodontic treatment but the cement glued on the wire feels uneven. Do you need an orthodontist to alter and reshape the cement or can a dentist do it? The last dentist I asked to alter it damaged it so I am thinking of favouring orthodontists but just interested in what you think. Thanks,

I grew up with buck teeth. The dentist said braces wouldnt fix it due to the shape of my gums. Is there anything medically that can be done to reshape gums or straighten teeth like that?,

Can you give me an estimate as to how much it would cost me for more orthodontic treatment?

Friday, May 21st, 2010
Q.
Hi. I had braces when i was 11 and had them until i was 13. But my four front teeth at the bottom and my two top teeth have moved. Im 17 and i don’t want to have to wear braces again, due to the impact on my social life, as i’d get bullied again, Not ideal. Is there any estimate to how much this would cost me as i am desperate!,

I want surgery to fix my bite, how do I go about looking into things?

Friday, May 14th, 2010
Q.
I have mandibular prognathism, which has given be an open bite. I was seen by max-fax about 10 yrs ago and they did not think it warranted surgery. I really do not like it and I feel that aesthetically my appearance would be improved if I had it done. I havent seen anyone else about this since and was wondering how I can go about looking into things again? Thanks,

Can any other dental experts other than orthodontists fix the damaged cement on my retainer?

Monday, May 10th, 2010
Q.
Hi Andrew I just have a general question regarding dental work. I have a bonded retainer on the back of my front teeth to keep them straight and together but a small part of the cement holding the wire there has chipped and so I am feeling quite a sharp edge on it (a bit like how if you shatter glass you get that sharp ‘nicking’ feel to it) which is making my tongue red and sore. I’ve been back to the orthodontist who applied the cement and he says that he can’t see anything wrong with it but it wasn’t like it before and its causing me a lot of discomfort for my mouth. Are there any other dental experts apart from orthodontists who can fix the damaged cement again so it doesn’t have a sharp edge to it anymore? I think the only way my orthodontist who applied the cement originally will only fix it if a substantial part of it comes off but currently its got a chipped edge to it on one side which is uncomfortable in the mouth. Thanks,
