Does inhalation sedation wear off quicker than IV sedation?

Monday, September 26th, 2011
Q.

Could you please advise me on the following problem; I normally get sedated (intravenous with valium) for my dental treatments as I have a choking phobia, anxiety, strong gag reflex and very sensitive teeth, but now I have no-one who can go with me as my friend who usually takes me is currently housebound. There is no-one else who can take me. I have mild toothache now, are there any other methods of sedation or similar that would enable me to get treatment but without the need for someone to accompany me? Is it possible to be sedated at a dental hospital (I live in Glasgow) and stay in a waiting room for a few hours until the effects of intravenous sedation wear off? Would inhalation sedation be an option? Does it make you as drowsy as intravenous sedation or would I still be fully conscious with inhalation sedation? Please help, Thanks

Can IV sedation be used during tooth extractions?

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011
Q.

Can you extract teeth whilst I am IV sedated. I have not been to the dentist for 30 years and hate my teeth and just want them out and replaced by false ones. Please help me. I had a terrible experience as a child and I now cannot even consider goimng to a surgery if it means poking around in my mouth and injections for extractions later on. My upper right wisdom tooth is hurting and 3 of my upper fromt teeth have bits missing from decay. All my teeth apart from my incisors have hurt me at some time in the past but this lastest ache is becoming intolerable

What does having a tooth removed under sedation involve?

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010
Q.

Hello, I have a tooth, lower right hand side at the back, which needed root canal treatment or extraction. I opted for root canal but after several attempts had to abandon this idea as for some reason the tooth or area around it just wouldn’t numb. Instead the dentist tried to dress and fill the tooth. Now a few months later i am in a lot of pain and the tooth needs to be removed. My dentist has told me the tooth needs quartering before removal. bearing in mind the nerve pain i felt during the attempted RC and filling I have been advised to have the tooth removed under sedation. If you have the time could you please explain this procedure to me and tell me what I’m likely to experience.
