Can I get free treatment from a dental school?

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr.Moore,

I had fixed braces as a teenager, it did not completely close all gaps, plus my bottom front teeth moved and I still have an overbite. I would like to know if there is anyway i could get free treatment from a Dentistry school as a guinea pig for trainee dentists. I am so envious of friends and have such a complex with my teeth it can makes me feel insecure. Being a full time student i won’t be able to afford the orthodontistry just yet.

I am a medical student, can I come and observe you?

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr Verma,

I am a 2nd year dental student at Barts and The London dental school. My question isn’t about a dental problem but there is a much more valuable way in which you can help me.

I was wondering whether it would be possible to observe you at the surgery some time. I am fascinated by the work that cosmetic dentists do, and we have started to restore teeth at dental school which is by far my favourite module.

I have contacted every dentist in the yellow pages and have been turned down. I would tremendously appreciate this opportunity even if it is for 1 hour. I anticipate your response.

Kind regards,

Do I need a chemistry qualification to apply for a dentistry course?

Friday, November 26th, 2010
Q.

I am 29 years old and considering a return to higher education. I was accepted to law school after High school and opted to change to optics after a couple of years.
Unfortunately, ill health did not allow me to complete my studies in either field but I would like to return to my studies.
I have 6 Scottish Higher qualifications, I attained 5 “A” grades and 1 “B”. The subjects are Maths, English, French, Modern Studies, Physics and Human Biology. My question is whether or not I will require a Chemistry qualification to gain entry.
If I wanted to get any first hand experience of working as a dentist is there anything you would recommend I do.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Will the NHS provide cosmetic dentistry?

Friday, November 26th, 2010
Q.

I am 57 and feel quite young except for my teeth. They are in a terrible state and it spoils every day for me. I cannot afford anything other than NHS treatment and feel that life is just passing me by because of my mouth. Please could you suggest anywhere I could go that would give me a sympathetic hearing. I don’t care how far I would have to travel I just want to be able to smile.

My husband has tried dentures but has a fear of gagging. Is there any way he can get implants for missing teeth?

Monday, October 11th, 2010
Q.
My partner has been without teeth at all for the past 10 years, he has tried using dentures but has a phobia of gagging and cannot stand the stress of the appointments. He has social anxiety disorder and agrophobia brought on by his low self esteem due to having no teeth. He is 36 years old would he be eligible for treatment on the NHS. I have checked the schooling websites and they do not offer implants. He feels that implants would be the only way to get teeth and be able to get his life back on track. Thanks.,
