Monday, April 20th, 2009
Q.
Hi i have recently missed an appointment at my nhs dentist due to illness. as this was the second appointment i missed i have been removed from the practise. at my previous visit i had a filling in my front tooth, which was only slightly discoloured and was not painful at all. since havin this done my tooth is extemely sensitive and it hurts when i touch where the filling is. Shall i see if the same dentist can fix it for me at the practise where i cant go or shall i just find another nhs dentist. also i was wondering the best whitening process would be either professionally or from over the counter, my teeth are naturally yellow n this really gets me down. i wont even have my picture taken. can this be done on the nhs???

my daughter bonded teeth is shorter and discoloured than the other can you advice

Monday, April 20th, 2009
Q.
Hello, can you please help!,i have a very distraught 16 year old daughter who a couple of months ago chipped one of her front teeth, leaving a semi circle chip at the bottom of the tooth. We took her to our usual dentist and he filled it,and it looked ok,but about 2 weeks later it came out, this happened again, then on the third time it came out she saw a different dentist as the other had left,he seemed to file down even more of her tooth and did a terrible job on the bonding, as now her tooth is shorter than the other and you can see a colour difference.I dont want to take her back there again as i feel it will just be made worst again!,can you give me some advice on the options for her tooth and recommend a good cosmetic dentist, this is quite upseting for her as she feels it has ruined her lovely smile. Many thanks

Is composite filling better than acrylic ones will it last longer?

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009
Q.
I had a white filling in a molar tooth I think it was an acrylic one, it was cured by a UV light and matched the natural colour of my tooth, since it was done about four months ago it has been sensitive to hot & cold, I’ve been back to the dentist, he explained that because the cavity was deep it could have been that the acrylic filling was conducting the heat/cold to the root causing some discomfort he has now replaced it with another type of white filling that did Not need a UV light to cure it, its pure white and he said it would be prone to staining, it left a nasty taste in my mouth he also told me not to eat on the repaired side for about an hour, My question is, what material is it likely to be and is this a better material than the acrylic one? Will it last for as long as an acrylic one, Thanks for your time,

Will my composite filling wear off and will it make my teeth weaker?

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009
Q.
Hello  Recently i had recieved 2 fillings in my two front teeth, not because of cavities, but because i had calcium deposits removed. My dentist replaced them with the composite bonding. Afterwards, I felt really naive because i didnt bother to question my dentist on how the procedure took place. I didnt know that he was going to actually drill away at my enamel in order to remove the stains. If i would have known that, i WOULDNT have had my calcium stains removed because they werent entirely noticeable; and plus composite doesnt compare to real enamel, right? I would really like to be enlightened on composite bonding. After my procedure, i visit some websites and did some research; and all of the statistics on composite bonding has astonished me in a negative way. My resources tell me that composite bonding doest last long, it stains over time and deteriorates.I am EXTREMLY concerned because those statistics have made me feel like i made the biggest mistake of my life. Im afraid to eat certain things because i feel my teeth or going to chip or stain. I am a smoker and im unsure if smoking will have a negative affect on my teeth. Im only 20 years old and i have a long life ahead of me. I am somewhat afraid that i will have to run back and forth to the dentist as i get older, worst of all; i will be a candidate for partials by the time im 35. I would be so greatful if you could give me your input on composite bonding. Everyone is telling me not to worry and to just eat regularly and do everything as i would normally do. But I have so many questions, it is hard for me to remain at ease. Here are a few questions….. -how does alcohol and smoking affect compostie fillings -if i am tewnty now, by what age will my fillings wear off, or will they wear off? -does composite filling make your teeth weaker, i.e break easily, chip, -are there special kinds of tooth paste made for composite feelings to remain white -How do i take proper care of my two front teeth (containing the composite). Thank You so much for your time.

I would like my teath whitened but my teeth have been damaged

Monday, April 6th, 2009
Q.
I would like my teath whitened but when I was a teenager and had my braces removed there was some damage and the dentist put something on to my teath to cover the damage – I think it was white filling / amalgam???. I also have quite a lot of exposed dentine near my gums. I know I am not suitable for veneers (I teath clench etc). Is there any way I can have my teath whitened, can whaever is on my frount teath be removed so they can be whittened ?

My white composite filling is ruff and is concave in shape

Friday, April 3rd, 2009
Q.
I recently had an old amalgam filling removed by an NHS dentist and replaced with a glass resin composite filling and topped at the end with a white one because it was so large. I ended up having to pay for this privately as the NHS don’t do white fillings. My only problem with it now is that it feels rough and rather than it being shaped to look like the contours of a molar, my dentist left a concave shape in the middle of it. Is this normal? As far as I was aware white composite fillings are supposed to be time consuming, but somehow my dentist did three of these in 40 minutes.

I had some small lower front fillings replaced and tooth shaping

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009
Q.
I had some small lower front fillings replaced the other day, by a dentist new to me. I’m pleased overall with the look of them but towards the end of the session, I realised he was using something a bit like a nail file. I thought he must be shaping the filling material but discovered when I came to pay that ‘tooth reshaping’ was on the list of treatment. I didn’t want my teeth reshaped and since this work was done, about 2mm down the front from the top of two of the teeth has been feeling slightly rough to my tongue. Today, a small piece of something flat and almost transparent came away when I brushed my teeth. I’m worried that the dentist has caused some fracturing of the enamel and whether this will put my teeth at risk. They feel a bit more sensitive than they did. Could this be put right by a thin smeer of resin? I wish I’d asked what he was doing when he started using the file, or whatever.

I am 48 year old with good teeth but upper tooth wear, dentist suggests composite fillings. Is there an alternative?

Saturday, March 28th, 2009
Q.
I am 48 year old with good teeth but upper tooth wear to 3B,4B,6B, through brushing to hard- leaving my teeth worn away in a v shape at the gums. This has been like this for the past 10 years. I can see no change when I look at the wear myself. My dentist has said that I now need to have 3 composite fillings to these teeth as they are nearly at the nerve and I cannot wait any longer. Last year I had my teeth bleached via this dentist with a home treatment that lasted 2 weeks (£300). I completed this treatment without having these teeth filled why if I have no pain, no decay, do I need to have them filled now? I did an overnight bleaching top-up only last week before visiting the dentist for my regular 6 month check without any problems. It is not the cost of the treatment, the fact that I do not want three new composite fillings to my teeth with all that goes with that. My dentist said that I must come in for these fillings as I cant wait any longer. I have no pain nor did I point out any problem to him the wear is the same as it has been for the past 4 years I have an electric toothbrush that stop if you apply to much pressure. So I cant see any change – I had x rays done before having the bleaching done they did not show-up any problems. Is this treatment from what I have said necessary? Is there no other treatment available? I have read about liquid plastic that forms a hermetic seal and seals the nerve. Do you know of this treatment or any other besides composite fillings.

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009
Q.
I have got a stain on my front tooth which has appeared over the years, which i think is due to acid erosion, i keep having to have a white filling over it to cover it up but it shows through after a couple of months, what would you suggest i have done to combat this once and for all.
