I Am Unsure As To Whether Dental Implants Are Suitable For Me At The Age Of 74. Is It Wise?

July 21st, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I have been assessed for dental implants for my top jaw. Is it wise at my age 74 to have this work done? I am in very good health but have fairly severe periodontitis, and I do not want to put myself into a position where I have to have remedial work done in my 80’s if I survive that long? I currently have a bridge of 4 at the front, two crowns and I have lost all wisdom teeth and one molar(5) in upper left jaw. The teeth in my upper jaw are mostly loose, and the bridge which was done in 2012 is loose. I have recently taken antibiotics and have been using hydrogen peroxide mouthwash, my mouth has certainly improved in recent weeks. I have had gum disease for several years, but the severity of it has only recently become apparent. I have attended for dental treatment on a regular basis all my life. My main fear is that the periodontitis will continue regardless if I have implants. I have also been recommended for a course of intensive hygiene treatment.

I Want To Study As An Oral Surgeon. If I Studied For This In India, Would I Be Able To Use This Qualification Abroad?

July 21st, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I could do with your help. I have finished my BDS and I want to do a MDS in oral surgery. But ideally I would want to go abroad, but finance is an issue. Is there any way by which I can do MDS in India and then go abroad and practice with the same qualification? (esp. in USA or Canada). I know about DDS but is it worth going abroad and studying dentistry all over again?
I want to be sure of what I want to do before I commit to something. Also I have always dreamt of studying abroad but I don’t know what to do now. Please help me with this issue. Your advice would be greatly received. Thank you.

10 Years Ago I Had A Full Brace When I Was Younger But As Soon As I Had Them Removed They Started Moving. What Are My Options?

July 18th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark,

I am looking to get my teeth fixed, I had a full brace when I was younger but as soon as I had them removed they started moving, my dentist said they would move back. Now it’s 10 years later and I still have one front tooth that sticks out and it makes me really unhappy.

My problem has always been that I haven’t had enough space for my teeth, which is what has happened.

What are my options? I would like to have straight teeth again and hopefully avoiding a full metal brace. Thank you for your time and I look forward to your reply.

Have You Ever Heard Of The Metal Wire Going Under The Gum After Dental Bridge Treatment? My Dentist Says It’s Normal.

July 18th, 2014
Q.

Hello Andrew, I hope you can help. After completion of a dental bridge treatment, the wire which was connected to the false tooth went inside the gum after a few days. I started feeling pain occasionally. The dentist who performed the bridge said that this is normal but prescribed antibiotics and painkillers if pain persists and also advised to use fluoride toothpaste. Does the metal wire ever go inside the gum after few days? Have you heard of this before? Please advise me on my future course of action. Thank you.

I Had A Bad Experience With Needles When I Was Young And I Haven’t Been Back Since. Are There Any Other Options For Phobia Patients?

July 18th, 2014
Q.

Hello. I have not been near a dentist for over 20 years as when I was younger had a terrible experience with a certain needle in my gum. As I remember they made a right mess from and I have never forgotten this. I know I need quite a lot of work doing being 43, but I cannot bear the thought of that needle going into my gum and I’m not sure how I would react. Are there other options out there? I do not have any issues with needles elsewhere just in my mouth, your advise would be helpful. Thanks.

Good Day. I Would One Day Like To Become A Dentist But I Am Confused. Could I Own My Own Practice If I Specialized In A Particular Subject?

July 18th, 2014
Q.

Good day, Dr Moore. I want to become a dentist, but I am confused. Is general dentistry a speciality among the 9 specialities because I want to one day own my own private practice as a dentist? Could I own my private practice if I specialize in any of the 9 specialities like orthodontics or periodontics? I am good at chemistry and maths but not so much at biology. I know all subjects are important but which are the subjects that are really important for dentistry? If I decide to become a doctor of dental medicine, would I be able to carry out operations like cleaning and others? Thank you in advance for your reply.

I Regret Not Getting Braces When I Was Younger. I’m 19 Now And I Never Smile. What Do You Feel Is The Best Thing To Do?

July 17th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. I have been self-conscious about my teeth my whole life. I refused to have braces when I was younger because I didn’t want the embarrassment of people noticing them and then noticing my teeth. Now I’m 19 years old and realise it was the biggest mistake I ever made. I never smile because of how my teeth look and it makes me really unhappy on a daily basis. What do you feel the best thing I could do is? Thanks.

Could I Have An Upper Plate Attached With No Pallet? How Is This Achieved?

July 17th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. I really hope you can help me. I am a long-term denture wearer, I’m a little sick and tired of it in all honesty and I’m looking for options. I saw an advert recently which mentioned that you can have an upper plate with no pallet attached. Is this true? Do you think this would involve dental implants and if so at what costs would be involved? I’m new to all this, I’ve just really had to make do and put up with it really. I look forward to hearing from you anyway. Thank you.

I Have Left My Teeth Get In A Bad State. I Have A Bad Smell Coming For My Teeth But I’m Too Embarrassed To Go. What Should I Do?

July 17th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. Unfortunately I have left my two teeth (second to last upper, and second to last lower) to rot as I have a fear of dentist but now they have started to smell badly, I need to get them both pulled out but I am too embarrassed to go to a dentist. Do you know if there is anyone who specialises in rotten teeth? I have a filling in my lower tooth but it is still in place. The situation is driving me mad. I’m not in pain but the smell is causing me not to speak to anyone as I’m in fear that other people may smell it. Please advise me on what to do.

How And Where Can I Check If My Dentist Is Mac Veneer Certified At Their Laboratory?

July 17th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Moore. How and where can I check if the dentist is Mac Veneer certified at their laboratory?

There are lots of dentist say they are Mac Veneer certified and cannot prove it.

Also, how do I know if they really order the real Mac Veneer from the MicroDental laboratory instead of going to a regular laboratory that they work with to get another kind of pressed ceramic veneer?

Please answer my question because doing cosmetic dental is a big investment and mostly safety.

I want a legitimate and honest answer from a dentist who cares for their patient.

Thank you!
