I Have Been Told That I Should Now Have Dentures For My Upper Jaw. I Have A Hypersensitive Gag Reflex. Is There An Alternative?

Q.
Hi Andrew. I have been battling periodontal disease for twenty five years and I have been told by my dentist that I should now have dentures for my upper jaw. I don’t think having five children has helped me. I am terrified that I won’t cope as I have a hypersensitive gag reflex. Is there any alternative at all? I have exposed roots and feel self conscious. I have a bridge and crowns across my 6 upper front teeth. I have a lot of bone loss, especially on the top right hand side. Due to neglect my oral hygiene as a child was very poor. I have worked very hard in adulthood to maintain good oral hygiene. I am a 56 year old non smoker.

Hello and thanks for getting in touch. It might be possible to use dental implants to hold either fixed teeth or as anchors for dentures to minimise their size and therefore their potential gag reflex. If you’re in my area Essex I would be happy to see you, if not try to search for a cosmetic dentist in your area to discuss a full range of possible options. You can spread the costs of treatment through a payment plan or alternatively ask your dentist to refer you to a dental hospital. I hope this helps and more information on dental implants is available through this website. Regards, Dr Andrew Moore.
