Do NHS support dental implants?

Q. Dear Dr Tennet Please can you help me as I am 39 years old and have had an upper denture since 2007. Since getting a cold last October I cannot keep my dentures in as I keep gagging and it is really getting me down. I suffer from major depression and rarely leave the house. If I do go out I have panic attacks and I used to be such a bubbly person, so outgoing. My best friend has noticed that I am severly depressed and suggested dental implants on the NHS – is there any such thing and if so, how do I go ahead with this?

A. The few implants carried out on the NHS are generally to assist birth defects & cancer victims etc. there is unlikely to be funding although I am sure that you are correct that it would help your confidence.
Your community dental service can be found via NHS direct and they might make a start with some new dentures that fit snuggly. They may be able to provide an at home service.
