I keep getting infections and needing apicoectomies after breaking my teeth when younger. Should I get implants or just keep taking antibiotics?

Thursday, November 4th, 2010
Q.
Hi, please can you help. I am a 43 year old female and broke my front teeth when I was 8. Since then I had have 2 lots of crowns on my front 4 teeth and although I have looked after them, I have had extensive problems for approx 20 years with frequent abscesses and have had 5 apicetomy’s over the years. I now have another abscess on my front teeth and have been advised that no further apicetomy’s can be performed and I have the options of either a plate, a bridge or implants. I understand the best option would be implants (albeit very costly), and have been advised that most of my gums would be lost, so astechically they will not look as good as they do right now. How can I be sure though, that after having them taken out and having either implants or a bridge, that another infection will not occur, since 5 apicetomy’s have not stopped subsequent infections and that this would affect my implants or bridge and I may be left with just the option of a plate, which I certainly do not want. If infection is likely to occur again (I have also had abscesses lanced inbetween apicetomys, so have had a LOT of infections), would an option be to leave the teeth as they are and take frequent courses of antiobiotics to keep the infection at bay, since I am in no pain and they look very good. I do not want to pay out a lot of money, only for an injection to re-occur and the implants/bridge be affected. Please can you advise?,

My dentist will not remove my upper tooth that crosses over another. I hate smiling! What can I do?

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
Q.
One of my upper front teeth crosses over the other and I hate smiling!! When I spoke to my dentist he said there is nothing he can do with it and refuses to take it out and replace it with an implant. What could I expect to pay for an implant and a whitening treatment to the rest of my teeth from yourselves (or is this not possible?),

My implant is going to need replacing soon but I cannot afford it, or the required bone graft, so what are my options?

Tuesday, November 2nd, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Caplan I had a dental implant fitted approximately 15 yrs ago following a facial injury from a RTA. The implant is now loose and although I have visited two cosmetic dentists to get it tightened, it has come loose again each time. The second dentist I visited stated that ‘it was on its way out’ and I needed to consider getting a new one fitted as soon as possible. However, my top jaw would need a further bone graft and not only do I not have the money currently for this procedure as I’m studying at university and have a bursary only, time is also an issue as I cannot take time off from studying. My question is, what chances are there that my implant will just suddenly fall out and should this happen could I revert back to a plate should my implant fall out just to tide me over until I can afford to get a new implant. I am rather anxious as this implant is for my top front teeth and I can’t get by without them.,

I have a gag reflex and am consequently scared of dentures. Is there any other option?

Friday, October 29th, 2010
Q.
My dentist has recommended that I have my five front teeth removed at the top and 3 at the bottom and have partial dentures. I would like to have a bridge but as I have protruding teeth he said that the bridge would also protrude. I have a bad gag reflex and am terrified of having dentures and not being able to cope. Please help.,

There is a gap between my implant bridge and gums, and food is getting stuck there. Is this normal?

Thursday, October 28th, 2010
Q.
Hello. I have just had dental implants fitted and also a bridge (two implants with three crowns). there is a gap between my gum and the teeth (where my bridge is)which looks quite odd and food is already getting stuck there. Is this normal? I did question the dentist who said that is fine. I had implants put in to disguise the gaps – although I will be able to eat better I am concerned about the appearance because of the gap between the teeth and the gum. Is this normal? Many thanks,
