my crown doesnt fit after breast cancer treatment

Sunday, September 14th, 2008
Q.
I hope you can help. In Dec I was diagnosed with breast cancer. During my chemotherapy I lost my gold crown off of my wisdom tooth. (I still have the crown) but was told that I could not have any dental treatment because of the threat of infection. Now the problem is that the crown will no longer fit the tooth as the tooth has eroded slightly. I am now finishing up my radiotherapy. I live in France at the moment and the dentist here tells me the tooth will have to be extracted. I have spent an absolute fotune on my teeth and am very reluctant to take this advice. Can you give me any further info ? I will be in UK shortly.

should i have an onlay or crown

Sunday, September 14th, 2008
Q.
Hi – I have an existing cap on a molar (actually it may be an ‘onlay’, as it is essentially half a tooth than has been cemented on to the remaining half-molar, which is fully intact – i.e., has not been ground into a peg) which has just broken in half. The dentist I have just seen has recommended a crown – which would require drilling away the remaining healthy tooth base into a peg – rather than another onlay. However, I’d prefer the onlay as it requires less intervention, and no grinding of what is otherwise a healthy half-tooth. What is your view on the pros versus cons of the two approaches? Thanks!

replace crown and dental implant

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
Q.
Hello Dr I wanted some advice on who to approach about replacing a crown and an implant that I had fitted 16 years ago, the right front tooth (implant) and the incisor (crown) beside it. The actual ‘teeth’ are bearable and good condition but the incisor sticks out, I was told this was unavoidable at the time because of the thickness of it, have materials developed now which would allow me my smile back? Also there is the problem of the dark greenish colour apparent at the root of the two teeth where my gums look like they’re coming away from the two crowns. I am extremely concious of my teeth and it has affected my confidence greatly, I would be grateful for any advice and a rough estimate of prices, is it true you get what you pay for? I am on a tight budget. Thank-you

my crowns are developing gaps between them

Sunday, August 17th, 2008
Q.
Hi, I have 5 crowns fitted to my top front teeth and the layout of them have been changing, like big gaps are forming and also they are protruding. I have had braces before and corrected the bite but my dentist said my top jaw is smaller than the bottom. I have since had problems with these crowns and I hate the way they look, I can’t talk or smile without feeling ugly. Also the crowns have formed gaps and starting to protrude. I don’t know why this is. Would it be because the crown post was already protruding so its makin it that way? My question is, it is possible to remove the crowns once and for all and have a partial denture instead? I have been struggling with my smile all through my life, I am 29 now. The last crowns and brace treament ruined my life and now I just want to remove all my top crowns, I rather be without them, thats how depressed it makes me

can my broken crown be removed

Tuesday, August 12th, 2008
Q.
Hi My lower third molar of the right jaw has a broken crown and I want it to get removed. But the dentist says that as the molar is attached to the lower jaw a surgical operation is required. Is there any way the tooth can be removed without an operation.

what should i do after my tooth cap has fallen off

Thursday, August 7th, 2008
Q.
2 years ago i had my front tooth capped as it was discloured due to having previously undergone root canal treatment on it. Recently as i was biting into a chocolate the full cap came off including the peg part of my tooth. The cap has temporarily been put back in using some kind of screw since part of my tooth is no longer there to keep it in place. I’ve been to two different dentists one saying i need a completely new cap and the other saying i just need work doing to support the existing cap. How do i know which one is right?
