what should i do after my tooth cap has fallen off

Q. 2 years ago i had my front tooth capped as it was discloured due to having previously undergone root canal treatment on it. Recently as i was biting into a chocolate the full cap came off including the peg part of my tooth. The cap has temporarily been put back in using some kind of screw since part of my tooth is no longer there to keep it in place. I’ve been to two different dentists one saying i need a completely new cap and the other saying i just need work doing to support the existing cap. How do i know which one is right?

A. If the whole crown has come off and part of the tooth has also broken then the most stable solution would be to have a new crown placed there. This is becasue your existing crown has been designed to fit the tooth underneath it, now this has changed, the crown will not fit as well and therefore will not be as strong as it was before.

I can understand why the dentist has given you the option to keep the existing crown and just make some adjustments to it- this is a cheaper option for you and involves less appointments, but if you’re looking longer term, then i would advise having a new one made.
