Can my year old overcrowded teeth be corrected?

Q. Hi, I am 25 years old and I have overcrowded bottom teeth, and I’m unsure of the best way to treat these. As a child my mum took me from orthodontist to orthodontist but they wouldn’t treat me because it didn’t affect my ‘bite’. However, recently the problem has got worse. Not necessarily in the sense that they look unsightly (obviously lower teeth aren’t seen as much), but more that they have become uncomfortable and I feel a constant pressure on them which sometimes becomes quite painful. They are also difficult to clean at the back. I did have both my lower wisdom teeth removed 7 weeks ago and I was told that this may help, but so far it hasn’t. What treatment would you recommend? I’d rather not have veneers as there is nothing physically wrong with the teeth other than they are not straight, and I would rather have a brace to be honest, but would teeth need to be removed so there is room to move the other teeth to? Thanks. I’m not even fussed if they are not tooth coloured braces. It’s more the uncomfortableness I want gone.

A. Thanks for your questions, firstly, it has only been seven weeks since your wisdom teeth were removed, and in terms of your teeth straightening, this is not a long time. As a child, when you were visiting the Orthodontist, I would presume that this was on NHS, and as a result of this, they would have been working  to the guidelines set down by the NHS which limit the cases they treat to the most severe. There are now many more treatments available to you, and so I would recommend that you attend a clinic for a consultation, at which the dental professional should be able to advise you of which straightening treatment are suitable for your specific case. I would recommend this more conservatice route prior to veneers. I hope this helps, but please do not hesitate to contact me again should you need further advise.

Hi, I am 23 and I have decided that a brace is needed. I have been reserved about getting in the past and therefore realize that I have missed out on getting them earlier as now I will have to pay for them…do you know how much a brace will cost?
I’m also worried that my incisors would be removed in order to straighten my teeth. At the moment my bottom right incisor is overlapping and is positioned almost like a slant. Is it possible for it to ever get straight? how long do you think it would take? I am currently searching around for advice before going to my local dentist for consultation. I would much appreaciate if you can help!
