Q. I have a temporary on a tooth. It has been in for about 2 weeks. Just recently my gum in front of the temporary is really hurting and is bothering me above the tooth and in between the tooth. What should I do? I have flossed and no food is coming out? Could it be that I have cut the gum with my floss?
A. It does sound like a gum problem, get your dentist to check it out next week

Q. I have just had my front four crowns replaced with all porcelain crowns as I wanted the most natural looking replacements for my old crowns. My front left tooth was root filled some years back and has become very dark, the problem is that the darkness is now showing through my crown, it looks as though it is a shadow or stain, I opted for the all porcelain in good faith, now I realise that the metal crown covered with porcelain would not have allowed the darkness of the old tooth to show through. This wasn’t mentioned as a possibility when I had my consultation and I am now wondering if there is anything my dentist can do to rectify the problem, I just feel as though I have replaced one worry about the appearance of my teeth with another!! I also feel that if I had known this was going to happen then i would have opted for the porcelain over metal crown. What should I do? the crowns were permanently fitted this morning and the dark shadow is really noticeable!
A. Thanks for your questions, firstly I would suggest that you go back to your dentist to discuss your concerns with them. If, as you say, the dentist did not discuss the possibility of an all porcelain crown not covering the discolouration caused by your root filled tooth, the dentist may be willing to discuss improving the results, may be even replacing the crown to acheive the aesthetically pleasing result you were expecting. I hope this helps, but would encourage you to contact me again shoukd you require any further assistance.
Kind Regards

Q. Dr. Moore! Hope you doing fine, i have a tooth out last week and the day goes by i feel that thier is a small particle tooth left, so i went back to the dentist yesterday and she said that thiers nothing to worry because its a bone..So why the bone comes out? and is it safe even the bone comes out? anyway thank you so much and hope to hear from you soon..
A. It might be a small fragment of dead bone, this commonly comes to the surface when a tooth is removed and will be no problem

Q. my six front teeth are starting to rotten with yellow hole forming and turning gray. the front one has a hole going up to my gums that is gray as well. so i was wondering if there is anything i can do to prevent more decaying of my teeth?
A. Firstly you should get these teeth filled and then cut out sugary foods and drinks from your diet. The use of a flouride tooth paste will also help when brushing 2-3 times a day.

Q. 2 questions. I am in my 50s a) my gum at the front is receding and makes one of my incisors look a lot longer – is there such a thing as a gum transplant? b) My dentist doesn’t want to replace my metal fillings with white – is this because it might crack my teeth?
A. You can have a gum graft. WHite fillings will strengthen your teth not crack them

Q. Hello i have applied to dentistry to start in 2010 and have an interview on the 3rd of november. I was wondering if you could tell me some of the most recent dental advancements in technology and if you know any current issues?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the issues are many and so are the advancements. my advice would be to have broad knowledge of all the basic dental procedures, they are not expecting you to be a dental geek, just enthusiastic.

Q. i have been diagniosed today with facial neuralgia this was because my trigeminal nerve was damaged during a root canal. i was wondering could you tell me the recovery time on this please?
A. hi many thanks for your email, the root canal treatment is usually not such a invasive procedure that it will have severed your nerve so the nerve will just be bruised more than likely.
my advice is to monitor the problem it should get better week on week and have full resolution in around 3 months time.

Q. my teeth are in a terrible state after lifetime of other health problems. ive tried my best to look after them but the amount of medication as well as constant vomiting have weakened them. i spent so much time in hospital that the last thing wanted to do when ok was visit dentist. now i really need to get to a dentist and want to but im so ashamed-what can i do?
A. Hi
Please dont be ashamed. We see a variety of problems, more extreme then your case. The most important thing to do is to visit a dentist to have a full mouth examination. This would allow the dentist to outline your options.

Q. Hi, I have just found out that my top right rear molar, is dying as a result of a deep filling, which is now beging to rest on the nerve of the tooth. The dentist has shown me the x-ray and said that as the root is so bent and not easily identifiable, he does not believe a root canal would be sucsessful. I have also had a bad expererience of root canal’s, where within months I had absess, and lost the tooth anyway. My dentist has said that my only option really is therefore too losse the tooth. My concern with this is that due to braces and overcrowding I had already had all my wisdom teeth removed and to loose this back tooth, I run the risk of my jaw bone disolving, there is already evidence of this on the x-ray following the wisdom extraction 3 years ago. I asked if there was any other options and he told me I would need splints and a crown which would cost about £2000. I am only 31 and worry that if I don’t make the right choice now it will be too late, I can’t afford £2000 for a tooth, but as it stands a booked for an extraction the week before xmas??!! Reading some of your other responses to questions indicate the crown can be placed over the tooth, can this not always be done? Any advise would be great. Thanks
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, my advice would be to ask to be referred to an endodontist for a second opinion. THere are many teeth which general dentists just do not have the skill to treat. however an endodontist is highly experianced at root canal treatment and can give you an idea of whether they feel it can be treated and level of sucess. once the root canal treatment is done it is then best to crown the tooth.
hope this is helpful.

Q. i am 19 both of my canines are impacted, now the canine on my left is lose and will likely fall out in the next month or so, once it falls out how long do you think it will take to grow back this is so embarrassing for me i am pregnant as well and i am going to feel so ugly!! and also once it falls out it there any way i can put a temp. tooth there?
A. hi many thanks for your email, i no this is not good news but once the baby tooth does fall out it is not automatic that the impacted canine will come out, very possibly it is more likely that the canine will not come out. my advice will be to see your dentist and discuss your options before you lose the tooth.

Q. I went to a local dentist and ask about my options for my two front teeth that are SLIGHTLY worn away on the bottom. he said he would do crowns. I said NO. BECAUSE I didn’t want so much of my teeth to be taken away. He said he would do veneers. I left the office devistated because he took my two front teeth down to miniature chicklets. He put on temps that are joined together in the center and are very tough.
I am sick over this.He is charging more for veneers than crowns. He has now choice to me but to do crowns. What can I do. I called the office and left a message to call me immediately on Monday. What is my recourse?
A. Ideally you should have discussed this before any treatment was done, sometimes cosmetic bonding can repair chipped teeth in a minimal way. If the teeth are now prepared veneers are the better option. Please talk to your dentist.

Q. Hi, I have braces right now and I am getting them off in two months.Well my orthodonist is going to leave gaps next to my two fromt teeth so i can get them enlarged for a better result,My question is,is how much does bonding usually range on inbetween two teeth,im in college and on my own and have no insurance right now. Also im wanting to get the whiting trays from the dentist, with the trays and gel you put in,i was woundering also how much that usually goes for???Please help with these,i need to know how much money i will need. Thank you!
A. hi, many thanks for your email, the cost of whitening using a home treatment can vary from £200 to £800 dependant on the system and type of whitening. the cost of bonding to close a gap between your two front teeth can also vary, but ranges from £200 – 400 for the treatment. hope this is helpful.
