Do you have any advice to help daughter with removable expander?

Q. Dear Dr Glaister My 8 year old daughter has been fitted with a removeable upper expander for a crossbite. She needs to initially wear it for 2 hours a day. I can’t even get her to wear it for 5 minutes as she says her mouth fills up with water. She has not managed to put it in herself either (she panics and cries). She returns to school on the 11th Jan and I would like her to be comfortable with it by then and speaking correctly. Do you have any advice? Many thanks.,
A. I would try to get her wearing it when she is doing something else to take her mind off it (e.g. watching television). If that fails I would suggest returning to her orthodontist as there may be another smaller type of expander to wear, or you may have to make a decision to delay treatment for another year or so
