Q. I am considering implants in my lower jaw as I have lost all the double back teeth. They were havily filled and all abcessed and I had to have them removed. I grind my teeth at night and in the day and wonder if this would have been a factor in my losing them to abcesses. I have had a mouthguard in the past but don’t use one now. Would the tooth grinding adversely affect the implants? Thank you
A. Yes tooth grinding might damage the implant crowns. They will need to be made to fit into your bite very precisely, you might need to wear a bite guard to protect them during the night.

Q. I was told i needed a crown on one of my back teeth and actually had it fitted today, when i got home and had a closer look i can see that i have not had a full crown as i was expecting but instead i have a patial crown that only covers half of my tooth.I am a little annoyed that this was not made clear me at the start as i would have rather have had a full crown as i feel that it would be much stronger. Is it normal practice to do this sort of crown?
A. These crowns are very effective without the need to dril down as much tooth tissue so see how it goes as it should work well.

Q. Dear doc! How much does the dental sealant cost?
A. hi many thanks for your email, there are many dental sealants but if your referring to a fissure sealant which is placed on back teeth to help protect them from decay it is usally around £50 per tooth. hope this is helpful.

Q. hello Doc, I am 34 years old and I have a primary tooth between my front tooth and the #2. it protrudes infront the #2, which is still there but twisted behind it. the primary tooth is also shaking slightly. I’ve been to the dentist and i was told i might have to do an extraction. the dentist also gave me this explanation for my top row i hope you can understand. 432112234 the 1s are the two front teeth and they count in both directions as you can see, i have two #2s on the right one of them being the primary tooth… my smile is not one im very proud of so is there any advice you can give me in terms of getting it straightened out? thanks a mil!
A. Its difficult to give you exact ideas without seeing you but one option might be removing the extra tooth and then having them straightened with something like invisalign.

Q. Hi, I only have 1 back molar tooth on the bottom rear (the 1 behind it & ahead of it had to be extracted). Are there any problems down the road if I don’t do anything about it – or should I be getting a bridge? I’m told a bridge will run around $3,000.00 but that’s a lot of money! Please let me know if there would be any problems leaving it as is? Thank you!
A. Its always best to replace missing teeth despite the cost as not replacing teeth causes added stress on the other teeth

Q. Hi Dr Moore, My son is almost 10 year old and today his dentist told me that he may need to pull out two of his baby teeth because the adult teeth are underneath and one of the roots of the baby teeth are still showing strong without sign of being absorbed. I am wondering if the pulling is necessary (a must) because I would prefer waiting for them naturally fall off rather than the manual intervene. Can you give me some advices on which way is the best for my son? thanks
A. If the baby teeth are in a poor position and preventing eruption of the permanent teeth then removal will help. I would follow your dentists advice or ask for a 2nd opinion from another dentist if you’re not sure

Q. Hello, How does zoom whitening get to the back of the mouth to whiten the back teeth?
A. Hi As a rule all power whitening techniques can only whiten the fron 10 or 12 teeth in each jaw. Home whitening with trays could whiten the back teeth mre predictably

Q. Hi, my question relates to crowns. I have a very large filling in one of my upper rear teeth (second from the back) my dentist thought the cavity was really a bit large to be filling but i didn’t want to lose the tooth so it was filled. I’ve been very careful with it and its lasted about 8 months but part of the tooth has now broken off, i assume this will only get worse and so my question is can the filling be ground down allong with the remaining tooth to support a crown, or does the filling have to be removed and the crown bonded just to the tooth as i don’t think there will be enough material to bond to if the filling is removed. thanks.
A. Both options are possible, you will need to go with your dentist’s advice on this, as each case is different. If you’re not happy, get a 2nd opinion from a dentist of a friend you trust

A. Unfortunately it is impossible for me to advise as I would need to assess an Xray of your tooth to determine whether it was possible to save.

Q. i need help and quick my mouth is destroyed i had alot of work done when i was younger but all the teth worked on are either gone or need pulling and because of this i have a major phobia and would love to be put asleep i have gaps in he front where teeth are missing and also at the back i need fillings and teeth removing money for me is a problem only low wage earner please help me get my smile and confidence back thank you
A. You could try to register with an NHS dentist. They may be able to refer you a sedation clinic or a dental school where treatment could be carried out. The treatment you would recieve would be fairly basic. Teeth would be pulled out, fillings could be replaced and you would probably have a denture to replace your missing teeth. Bridges can be made on the NHS but you probably wouldn’t be able to be put to sleep. There are private dentists that also offer sedation but the cost of treatment is much higher

Q. Hello, I’m 18 years old and am extremely embarrassed of my teeth due to a diet when I was younger that used to be filled with sugar. I have had several at the back taken out.. 3 amalgam fillings and the rest seem to be decaying. I also have an extra tooth that overlaps one of the teeth on the front of my mouth. I am ashamed to smile and I have a phobia of the dentist and I feel whenever I visit the dentist they have an unfriendly attitude and are unsympathetic about the state of my teeth. They are really depressing me and I feel if I don’t get them fixed then I’ll always be unhappy. I was wondering, what do you think you cost would be to get them fixed? Thanks for taking the time to read and I hope to hear back from you.
A.
Thank you for your question
You need to find a dentist that you feel comfortable with. Is is almost like an interview process for. The best type of treatment is private because many more treatment options are available to you and if some dentist offer sedation this may be better for you especially if you are nervous. Private dentists are also able to spend more time with you so you will feel less rushed.
It sounds like you need quite a lot of work on your mouth and I’m sure you are considering finances as well. Private dentistry is more expensive than NHS dentistry as everyone knows but there payment plans available at most dental practices now. If you get your mouth sorted out now then there will fewer problems in the future.
I hope this helps and I hope that you get your teeth fixed.
Kind regards

Q. I am 62 years old and I have badly neglected my teeth, I have a partial denture and the rest of my teeth are uneven, roots showing etc. In some cases the bone has worn away. All my bottom teeth are okay but very uneven, I don’t know if crowns will be able to rectify the damage. If so I would need approx 16 crowns and a partial denture of 6 teeth. Can you advise on suitability and approx cost?
A. It is very difficult to advise you on suitability. You would need to have x-rays taken, assessment of the health of your gums, mobility scores and then a treatment plan could be devised. If you have a full mouth rehabilitation which is possible you could end up spending between £10,000 and £20,000 depending on your needs.
You need to go and see a cosmetic/restorative dentist for an opinion so that all the correct records can be taken to come up with a suitable treatment plan.

Q. At the back of my lower teeth I do not have any teeth and my face goes in at bit what would you suggest to improve the shape of my face, also I have half a top plate due to an accident how much a implants now and would there be some sort of gum to stop lines appearing above my lips.
A. Dear Val,
Thank you for your 3 questions. Taking them in order:
1. Face shape improvement – Your two options are a plate or implants to replace your missing teeth. This would improve the support to your cheeks – just how much is hard to say.
2. replacing your top plate – implants are a definite option. However there is often not enough bone to place the implants . This would mean an extra surgical stage to create some bone . This is called a sinus lift. Once this has been done implants can be placed. Typical implant costs are in the region of £2000 to £3000 but this can vary depending on the experience and location of the dentist. There would be an extra cost for the sinus lift.
3. Extra gum to stop lines. It sounds from this that you have lost a fair amount of bone lost. This can be replaced prior to implant placement with a bone graft or gum can be added to a denture.
In cases where bone loss is a problem a well made denture with precision attachments to the remaining teeth can often be the most simple and cost effective option
Your case needs a proper comprehensive assessment and treatment plan to work out the best options for you from a restorative and financial perspective.
