Are elastic bands on the back teeth part of the braces treatment?

Sometimes the orthodontist uses elastics as part of the braces treatment. This is separate to the metal braces that will be fitted to move the teeth into their correct positions.

Surely its not normal practice to fit elastic bands round braces? What happens if these come out while your sleeping? Thanks,
It is normal practice, the bands rarely come off even when eating, and do not represent a hazard.
