Is It Safe to Cut a Bridge to Treat an Infected Tooth?

Q.
Hi, I have a porcelain coated platinum bridge which I have had for about 23 years and it has not caused any problems. But now I have an infection in one of the teeth holding the bridge, which I have been given antibiotics for.
My dentist said he needs to remove the infected tooth and therefore will cut the bridge at the other tooth and then remove part of the bridge with the infected tooth. Is it safe to cut the bridge? Thank you.
A.
Hello, thank you for your question. Sectioning of the bridge is normally very safe but sometimes bits of the porcelain can chip away. It is likely this is also only a temporary/immediate measure to get the tooth out and a long term solution will be needed, so it’s likely the whole bridge will need to be replaced anyway.  Regards, Mark.
