Is It Safe to Cut a Bridge to Treat an Infected Tooth?

Monday, March 30th, 2015
Q.

Hi, I have a porcelain coated platinum bridge which I have had for about 23 years and it has not caused any problems. But now I have an infection in one of the teeth holding the bridge, which I have been given antibiotics for.
My dentist said he needs to remove the infected tooth and therefore will cut the bridge at the other tooth and then remove part of the bridge with the infected tooth. Is it safe to cut the bridge? Thank you.

My Crowned Tooth Has A Broken Post And Infection, Are The Costs I Have Been Quoted Accurate?

Wednesday, April 10th, 2013
Q.

I have a crown with a broken post and possible infection (seen on xray). The tooth is the front left one.
The crown is also loose and has to come out.
My dentist gave me two option: To remove the tooth or two keep it (not reccomended by him, couse of the infection and possibility he may not be able to drill the remaining post out and Infection may not be treated succsesfully.
If I remove my tooth, I have option of 1.-implant (only done privately and too expensive (£2000)
2.dentures for tooth-i dont like it because I can take them in and out
3.bridge-done on nhs with one wing and possibility it may coume out, or done privetly with two wings, over my other front tooth, but it may couse pain, and again it cost more (£1000).
What would you reccomend?
I have to mention that I was planing to do veneer on my other right front tooth -its crooked-anyway so these two look the same, and veneer on NHS cost me £300.

Many thanks

Should I be worried about continued dental pain after root canal treatment?

Monday, April 2nd, 2012
Q.

I finished root canal treatment yesterday, after checking the xray, a tiny bit at the very top of the root has been missed, this morning it feels the same as it did at the beginning before ant treatment began.I ,ve had 1 weeks course of antibiotics,it was cleaned out as this was being done it was very smelly and the pulp had rotted away. It was covered & i went back 9 days later,it stil felt odd sort of tingly numb feeling & the smell was back. When it was being recleaned yesterday i could smell it again it was also a bit swollen and tender at the top, she finshed the job & then checked the xray where it was noticed a tiny bit has been missed, she seemed to think it would be fine i have to go back in 10 days, but at the minute it feels the same as it did right at the beginning about 6 weeks now

I’ve been on penicillin and the pain is gone but the tooth is still sore, is this normal?

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011
Q.

Hi, I have had terrible tooth ace on my front tooth for some time and I can feel a pulsing sensation on the nerve behind the tooth. so I went to the dentist and they adviced me to have root canal treatment on the tooth feeling this would sort the problem out. At the same time I also had an infection, so when they gave me the anaesthetic the tooth did not go numb, so I was then told they would have to control the infection before
treatment was carried out. they put me on penicillin which ive been on for for 3 days now and the pain is gone but the tooth is still a little sore, is this normal?

can you tell me what the long term effects would be of not having my infected tooth removed?

Tuesday, September 6th, 2011
Q.

I have a continuing infection in a tooth which has had root canal treatment several years ago. There is considerable bone loss now and the tooth gets loose and then tightens up again when the infection has passed. My dentist recommends that I have the tooth removed but I am a bit of a coward. Could you advise me what the long term effects are if I do not have the tooth removed. I have heard that it could cause me to become very ill if I allow it to continue.

I’m scared to have treatment after failed attempts. Can you help?

Monday, May 9th, 2011
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes,

The maxillary lateral incisor (22)was root-filled in March 2009. since then there has been recurrent periapical infection
I was referred for a apicectomy.
1. I am had Zoledronic acid (Aclasta) for osteoporosis on 3/2011.

Do you think that it is possible to have the dental treatment? As my last dentist has now retired and i have found it difficult to find a dentist i can trust after all the problems i have suffered with my teeth. I also read that apicetomies have a low success rate. Could this be why infection keeps coming back, i hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards

Do I have any option but tooth extraction?

Thursday, March 31st, 2011
Q.

lower molar gets root canal 2 years ago. x-ray at time shows suspicious small shaded area beneath the root that may be infection. so no crown is put on in case the infection develops and removal is req’d. Now, infection starts to erupt from gum surrounding the tooth. Dentist suspects fractured tooth has been cause but not seen on xray. new xray now suggests infection spreading in bone. Is there really any option but removal?

What can I do about having a tooth extracted – thus being unable to wear a bridge?

Monday, March 28th, 2011
Q.

I am 66 years of age and have a 6 bridge covering the front teeth due to a cricket accident many many years ago. I have now been told that a tooth under the bridge has bad decay and needs to be removed making a bridge impossible. I am uncertain as to the best way forward based on options, appearance and cost. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have had root canal treatment on the same tooth and it is still infected, what should I do?

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011
Q.

I have had root canal treatment on two teeth, one years old & one current after an infection developed in the root . The current treatment does not seem to have been successful after two or three attempts by my dentist. I am currently on a course of antiboitics (metronidazole) to try & finally clear the infection. If this is not successful my dentist says the tooth will have to be extracted. As this is an upper main molar I would like to retain the tooth. The old root canal tooth has also become sensitive again (lower molar) but my main concern is the current problem. Could you please offer a second opinion.

Kind Regards
