I Had Dental Phobia As A Teenager And Now I Need To Fix My Gummy Smile. Is This Even Possible?

Tuesday, May 27th, 2014
Q.

Hello Mark. I lost teeth on the left side of my jaw due to serious dental phobia when I was a teenager. I had implants about 14 years ago and I am happy with them, the only issue is cosmetic – I have a gummy smile and due to loss of teeth on the left, the gums have shrunk, but not on the right side where I still have teeth, making my smile asymmetrical which makes me feel very self-conscious. Also the bridge over the implants is a different colour from my teeth on the right jaw. Maybe a more appealing and cosmetic bridge over the implants could make a difference? Thank you for taking the time to reply to me.

I Noticed My Sons Upper Gums Are Very Dark Around The Front. Could You Tell Me What Is Causing This?

Tuesday, May 20th, 2014
Q.

Hello Andrew. I hope you can quickly help me. I noticed my sons upper gums today they are not a normal red pink colour and are very dark around the front only. He is 11 years old and brushes regularly.  He has a healthy balanced diet and doesn’t smoke as he is very young and I am sure of this. Could you possibly tell me what is causing this? I am very concerned.  Does he need to see the dentist every six months? His dentist is very satisfied. Thank you in advance for your time, I look forward to hearing your reply.

Can You Tell Me Your Opinion On LANAP Treatment Versus FMD Treatment?

Monday, May 19th, 2014
Q.

I am 52 years of age and I am suffering with chronic periodontitis. I have been referred by my dentist to a dental specialist for treatment. The specialist Dr I have seen has offered me FMD as a treatment. This looks to me like a very painful procedure that I will have to undergo in two separate sittings. The pain of which I will suffer for more than 48 hours after each procedure. I understand this is the removal of all infected flesh to give healthy flesh a chance to heal and the deep cleaning of the roots of my teeth. From what I have read, I understand that the scar tissue that will be left to me will be equally susceptible to infection as the original tissue was. The dental specialists I have been referred to do not offer LANAP and I am wondering if LANAP is a better treatment for my periodontitis than FMD. From what I have read about LANAP it certainly sounds less painful and more so much more effective in the long term. Please tell me your opinion on FMD versus LANAP? Many thanks.

My Gums Are Receding From Every Tooth. Is It Possible To Have A Gum Graft For Such A Large Area?

Monday, May 12th, 2014
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes. I am having terrible trouble with my gums receding. It started about 10 years ago but with dental treatment it stopped at a level I could cope with but in the last few months it has started up again and now I would say my gums have receded from every tooth and worse of all this morning my top two teeth now have a small gap between them. I am currently on anti-biotics. I have been reading up on gum graphs but is this possible for such a large area? This is badly affecting my life now as I am losing my self-confidence in public and I hate to smile. I hope you can advise me on what to do? Thank you for your time.

My Gums Shrank Considerably And Now I Look 5 Years Older. Can Anything Be Done To Bring Back My Youthful Appearance?

Tuesday, May 6th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I am a young looking 65 year old.
My dentist misjudged my gums while
preparing them for 8 span bridge he was having made for me. He removed too much and as a result I needed to have a crown lengthening. My gums
shrank considerably after I was healed.
I now look at least 5 years older than I
did before the surgery. Can anything be done to bring back my youthful
appearance? Should I reporting him
to the peer review board? Thank you. I look forward to your reply.

My Front Tooth Sticks Out. I’d Like To Know A Way To Fix It Without It Being Extracted?

Friday, May 2nd, 2014
Q.

Hello. I’m 47 and one front tooth sticks out really bad, my dentist said there is nothing he can do, because of gum problems, apart from taking it out. I tend not to smile very much because its very noticeable and I think its gotten worse over the years. If there is anything you can consider for me to bring my smile back I would be very grateful. If there is something you can do without taking it out? I am really frightened of the dentist at the best of times. He also said a crown would not work because it would make my tooth look long.

Are There Any Clinics In The UK Which Offers BOST Treatment?

Friday, April 25th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. Are there any other clinics in the UK which offer the BOST treatment for periodontal disease?
Is there any data available on the effectiveness of the treatment?
How would I find out if there which clinics abroad offer BOST?
I have been diagnosed with severe and moderate localised periodontal disease and have had this for the past 20 years. I have recently lost 5 teeth in the past 5 years and there are some others which are being affected. I have quarterly hygiene appointments but the problem still progresses. I have had root planing before and have been advised to have it again. I look forward to your reply. Regards.

Is There Any Practice In The North Which Does Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation? Or Do I Need To Travel To London?

Tuesday, April 15th, 2014
Q.

Hi Mark. I’m very interested in having pinhole gum rejuvenation after seeing it on the web. I have found several practices that do this procedure but they’re all in the south east of the country and I live in the north east. I was wondering if you knew of any one in the North who could carry out this procedure? My gums have receded very badly particularly on my bottom teeth. I do see my own dentist every six months and brush and floss twice a day. I thought it was something I would have to live with until I saw this procedure.

I’ve Been Diagnosed With Bone Loss And The Treatment They Have Given Me Has Had No Effect Over The Last Three Weeks. What Should My Next Step Be?

Monday, April 14th, 2014
Q.

I am a 43 years old divorced mother of two and have been diagnosed with bone loss on the upper right and lower right of my face. I am being treated with chlorhexidine gluconate. I have been using this for 3 weeks now and have seen no improvement. I also suffer from graves disease. What should my next step be? The receding gums seem aggressive and this was not being treated at all by my dentist. He did my fillings and then the pains began – since January I’m now being treated by an orthodontist who assured that dentures will not be needed any time soon. Is it time to order veneers as my teeth are also discoloured and ugly. Please help. Your answers will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I Had An Apicoectomy Last Week. Will My Gums Grow Back And How Long Will It Take To Heal?

Thursday, April 10th, 2014
Q.

Hello Dr Hughes. I had an attempted apicoectomy last week. He cut a lot of my gum to expose tooth number 19. Because of an infection the Dr felt he did not want to take any more bone away and I should go the implant route. He closed me up. My gums along the tooth and teeth 20 21 22 are very exposed and sore. I feel as if the roots are partially exposed like I had significant recession. Will this gum grow back and what should I do if it doesn’t? I am in quite a bit of pain at the moment. Could you help me and tell me what I should do. Thank you.
