Why will my implant treatment require two stages?

Q. Hi Rob, Im getting an inplant done for a missing top front tooth, my dentist wants to do a two stage procedure, Im wondering why its neccessary for a two stage, and why i cant have the permanent crown put on the implant after the first healing time of the gum.? Is this something to do with asthetics and the gum moulding around the temporary tooth? I wonder why the gum cant naturally heal around the final crown. Im due for the surgery on thurs so a reply pretty soon would be great, thanks.
A. The gum heals quickly but bone takes longer to heal and mature. The crown transmits the biting stresses down the implant and into the bone so usually it is better to wait. Some cases where the biting forces are small and easy to control can be crowned at an early stage. Rob
