What would the procedure to have my two big front teeth filed down? Would it cause tooth sensitivity?

Q. Hi Sunita,my front 2 teeth are 1mm longer than my other teeth. My dentist has told me its not much but because of my face shape and size they seem to look bigger and not in line with my other teeth.I am considering to get them filed, however i do understand that it may cause sensitivity.I want to know whether it will really reduce the size, what the procedure is,will it hurt?and also how bad the sensitivity will be afterwards.Thanx.,
A. Dear Enquirer, This is something I see in my practice on a weekly basis. Without seeing you it is difficult to give an expert opinion, but it is possible to shorten the front teeth as long as the reduction is kept within the outer protective coating of the tooth, known as the enamel of your tooth. I normally do this procedure without an anaesthetic so that my patient can let me know if the tooth is becoming sensitive as I trim the tooth. That way I make sure that any adjustment of the tooth done with the drill will be safe and will not leave my patient with sensitivity afterwards. I hope this helps, Sunita
