The pain during and especially after the treatment of teeth whitening was horrific

Q. I had my teeth whitened by the bleaching method yesterday. The procedure was carried out by a dental hygenist. The pain during and especially after treatment is horrific. No pain killers have helped reduce the pain. Even when told to rub sensodyne toothpaste on the teeth did not make any impact on the pain. My gume turned white and there was a lot of spillage of the bleach into my mouth. In your opinion is this the reaction I am going through normal. Its over 24 hours now and the pain has not reduced.

A. Sensitivity is a feature of whitening despite the hype. However I personally dont expect it to be horrific as described. Mild is reasonable. In those cases were it is more than mild, you are doing the right things, if you have a mouth guard apply the sensodyne or Tooth mouse ( GC Dental ) and leave on all night. The gum whitening is a recognised complication if the gums are not fully protected.

At this stage there is a limit to what you can do. The pain should subside within a few days, but you may wish to contact the practice to register a possible complaint they can investigate what happened and let you know whether your case was bad luck or below the standard they were expecting

Sorry you’ve had a bad experience
