Are there any good alternatives to crown treatment?

Thursday, August 30th, 2012
Q.

Hi, I have broken one of my front teeth when I was about 10 years old, my dentist put one of these cosmetic fillings that you put around a pin that he inserts in your tooth, when I became 16 I changed that filling because it was starting to decay and my tooth looked much better. However, when I turned 18 I chipped a small piece of that filling and now it doesn’t look as good as it used to be. when I went to my dentist to change it again he told that the only way to replace is to file the whole tooth and put a crown on it, but he also discouraged me to do so because of the nature of putting a crown on a fore tooth and how it would be hard to fix when it changes color. His opinion was is to keep my current filling for as long as I can then put the filling so it can last me longer. Is there any possible way to fix my tooth without reserving to crowns that would be much stable and less risky. If not is there any possible way to fix my current filling so it can last me longer, something that will make it feel and look better?

thank you very much

One of my roots is exposed due to my recent implant placement, how can I protect it from further exposure?

Thursday, August 16th, 2012
Q.

hi, I don’t know who to talk to about this so my problem is that one of my roots of one of my teeth has been exposed partially as a result of a bit of an unfortunate incident with a dental implant placement (next to it). This happened in the upper jaw tooth number 4. How can i protect the root from further exposure? Would bonding or resin be suitable? what would be other methods to protect it? As it is a side effect of the surgery I would expect the dental surgeon to cover the cost so do not have to be very tight I would imagine It is just 3 mm long exposure but it does not look very nice and i had the implant done to improve my smile

Can my toddler have his chipped tooth filled in?

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010
Q.
My 18 month old son fell and chipped one of his front teeth last night. There was no bleeding from the tooth or gums that we could see. He did cut his lip a little, but the bleeding stopped in a minute or so. From a cosmetic point, will a pediatric dentist attempt to fill a chipped tooth on a toddler, or is this something we’ll just have to live with until it falls out in a few years? Thanks!,

Q.
Hello I keep having trouble with my back teeth. My dentist gave me a filling both back teeth on either side because I had a cavity in both but the one on the left has not helped at all. I want it removed, will it make much difference to my jaw and eating?,

Tooth looks grey

Thursday, January 7th, 2010
Q.
Okay so first of all I had a filling replaced on my front tooth, then I noticed it was really hard to floss because the filling was bulkier than before and I felt constant pressure. So I returned to the dentist and he said I needed a root canal, and we did a root canal. during this whole process my tooth has moved back slightly, which he was not too concerned with, but today :’( I just noticed it’s slightly grey. I am in my early thirties and getting married in June, I cannot have a grey tooth!!!!!! Is it possible the dentist is at fault….it was only after he worked on it that it shifted and is now turning grey. What are my options for fixing?,

How much tooth is actually needed to do a filling?

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
My girlfriend just had a filling fall out. Her NHS dentist told her she couldn’t put another filling in as there is not enough tooth to fill. Exactly how much tooth is actually needed to do a filling? I don’t think it’s much as one of my teeth is mostly filling. The dentist said to her she would need a to perform extraction of the tooth and fit a bridge which NHS doesn’t cover so would cost around 800 pounds or an implant which would be 1000. I have also had an implant fitted on the NHS so is the dentist lying? Sorry, I realise that’s actually two questions…

How long would it take my teeth to grow down after having my white fillings

Friday, December 18th, 2009
Q.
Hi Julian, I have a couple of points that I need some help on. 1) One of my bottom inscisors has grown inwards and has little room. My dentist has recommended removing it – however I am concerned about the symmetry in my lower mouth and fear losing a biting tooth. What are you views on this? 2) I have ground my teeth down over a number of years – about 3-4mm according to my dentist. He has recommended building them up with white filling and then letting my back teeth grow down over time? I’m a little concerned about the strength of this method and how long it would take for my teeth to grow down following this. I am a 37 male if this helps. Any thoughts are much appreciated. Rgds

My filling is fracturing and tastes weird is it harmless?

Monday, December 7th, 2009
Q.
Hi there, Im 27 and having a nightmare with my teeth, I havnt been to the dentist in over 3 years because my husbands salary went up and we are no longer entitled to it free. Anyway, my top middle tooth had previously had a black filling in, and the other day while I was eating a crunchy pizza, I heard a crack and half the filling fell out, the tooth is wobbly at the back half and Im really sore. Every time I swallow, I taste a chemical taste and worried about mercury poisoning (if not, what is the taste?) I have to find a dentist on Monday, and wont even have the time off to get it fixed until next Friday, whats the best thing to do until then, is the chemical taste harmless? half the filling is still there. Thank you This is horrible

My new silver fillings tastes metalic should I be worried?

Friday, December 4th, 2009
Q.
Dear Rob, I have just had a silver filling frmo my local NHS dentist. In fact I’ve had three – I knew about two but it looks to me like I have had a third added onto one of my other teeth. The third filling tastes slightly metalic as I run my tongue over it. My dentist had to reshape the filling in the next tooth – otherwise nothing else of note happened. Do I need to get the metalic taste checked out? Many thanks!!!
