What should I do about gum recession?

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011
Q.

Hi,
I have some gum recession behind my lower front two teeth, probably from 10 years of smoking. I have since given up and endeavour to keep my teeth in good health. Both teeth have some slight movement in them, one a very small amount and the other less than a millimetre, but concerning nonetheless. Can one get gum grafting in the UK and would this help?

Many thanks,

I have given up foods that stain, can you tell me the best way to whiten my teeth?

Q.

Hi Dr Butt,

I recently decided to give up smoking and tea/coffee as they were beginning to really show on my teeth. As a treat to myself i have decided that i want to have my teeth professionally whitened, but i am not sure what is the safest product/supplier with the best results..

This is where i was hoping your expertise could guide me.

I have done some research, but i am not sure were to look. I am approx a C2 on a professional tooth shade guide, an wish to get to a A1-B1.

Can you please advise, in your opinion, the safest and most affective product for a dentist to use?

Thanks

What are the best options to save my smile if I suffer from advanceed periodontal disease?

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010
Q.

hi , i am 43 and have quite advanced periodontal disease , also an overbite on my top teeth and tmj disorder . i have already had 5 teeth removed , and today i saw a periodontist and he said i need another 3 out but not replace them .. this periodontal disease started about 5 years ago . i do smoke , which i know is a huge factor in the disease .. what i want to know is if i had all my teeth removed , would that end the disease ? and could i then have implants to replace all my teeth ? or is it not possible because of gum and bone reduction ? my dentist is always saying they are trying to save my teeth , but whats the point if they are destroying whats underneath ??? Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated as at present I am finding this deeply depressing at the moment in time

My molar has cracked in half. Would I be able to get treatment on the NHS? Also, what can be done about brown tooth stains?

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010
Q.
Hello I am unemployed and a part time university student. One of my molars has cracked in half and is causing me some discomfort. Will I be able to get any help with getting this sorted out? Also, I have just given up smoking and have noticed behind my lower central incisors there is alot of brown/black, possibly tobacco staining. What is a good toothpaste to get rid of this? Thanks,

My gums are turning a dark greyish blue black. I do smoke. Is there something wrong?

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010
Q.
About a year ago I noticed my lower gums by my four front teeth were turning a dark greyish blue black color. I do smoke. My teeth nor gums are not sensitive or painful but recently I noticed my upper gums around my front teeth are now changing to this color too. Is this something I should be very worried about like cancer or is it from smoking?,

I have really bad teeth and am too scared to go back

Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010
Q.
I have really bad teeth and am too scared to go back to the dentists. My last visit was about 5 years ago just before my youngest daughter was diagnosed with a life limiting condition and I hate to say it but I neglected my own health and teeth while looking after her. I now have a rotting tooth right at the front plus many other problems – I lived on fizzy drinks to give me energy and smoked 10 cigarettes a day for stress and am now paying the price. What can I do to sort them out? Where can I go where I won’t be looked at in disgust? Really sad and depressed about this and the amount of time I spend worrying about this should be spent with my daughter but I just don’t know what to do….,
