I have periodontal disease. Is there anything that can be done?

Monday, November 22nd, 2010
Q.

I was recently referred to a dental hospital by my dentist, the consultant says I have periodontal disease and there is nothing that can be done. Not even implants due to extensive bone loss. I wanted veneers and my dentist had discussed fitting a splint and then veneers. Are there really no options available to me cosmetically??

I have been told braces cannot be fitted unless I have some of my bottom teeth shaved. Is he right to do this?

Q.
I have been referred to the dental hospital for braces on the NHS. I am 37 and I have had periodontal problems and as such my teeth have moved making them crooked. I saw a private dentist who said he cannot fit braces unless I have some shaved off my bottom set thus stopping the top set catching and moving. He said the top set (where I am having a brace ) is unstable. Is he right or will the dental hospital still go ahead and fit braces even of my teeth move ! Also if I offered to pay a part of my treatment would I be able to offer to pay towards a clear brace or one that’s not a fixed one ? Or do I have to have metal ones. are they the only ones I can have or can put some money towards other types. sorry I know there is a lot of questions there.,

Is the bone graft carried out in a hospital? How much is it going to cost?

Monday, June 14th, 2010
Q.
I have suffered with gum disease since the age of 20 and had extensive periodontal treatment in my younger years. I have been told this is hereditory as my mother lost all her teeth in her late 20’s. I am now 52. I have recently had 2 back teeth one bottom and one immediately above removed due to excessive bone loss. This area shows when I smile. I currently have a bridge totalling 6 teeth fixed by 4 crowns running from both front teeth at the top – back to the area where one of the recent teeth was removed, the gum around the bridge work has receded. In addition my bottom four teeth at the front have extensive gum loss. I was a smoker for many years and have finally been able to break the habit as I am aware this has been a negative factor in the deterioration of my dental health. I am terrified of ending up with loose dentures and feel that further cost for bridges and crowns would be a waste of money due to the instability of surrounding teeth. I understand that bone implant can be carried out so that there would be an option for fixed denture or bridges. Is this procedure carried out in a hospital and how much is this likely to cost? Prior to implant surgery.,
