I have been told braces cannot be fitted unless I have some of my bottom teeth shaved. Is he right to do this?

Q. I have been referred to the dental hospital for braces on the NHS. I am 37 and I have had periodontal problems and as such my teeth have moved making them crooked. I saw a private dentist who said he cannot fit braces unless I have some shaved off my bottom set thus stopping the top set catching and moving. He said the top set (where I am having a brace ) is unstable. Is he right or will the dental hospital still go ahead and fit braces even of my teeth move ! Also if I offered to pay a part of my treatment would I be able to offer to pay towards a clear brace or one that’s not a fixed one ? Or do I have to have metal ones. are they the only ones I can have or can put some money towards other types. sorry I know there is a lot of questions there.,
A. You should be getting a safe treatment plan from the hospital regarding the gum disease. You may have to accept treatment with the devices / methods that they are used to using. Hope this helps Rob
