I still have the brown edges after treatment at the NHS

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q.
Hi, I used to be an nhs dental nurse some years ago and I take care of my teeth and gums. Every dental surgeon I assisted gave their patients’ teeth a full and comprehensive scale and polish as standard. I still receive nhs dental treatment but, since the new scale of charges was introduced a few years ago, neither of the dentists I’ve seen have done much on the scaling and polishing side, with the result that my 5 lower front teeth, for the first time in my life, have became stained. I visited my dentist last week, pointed out to him the stain trapped between my teeth, and told him that my son is getting married soon, so he scraped off the stain on the front surfaces, but not the stain trapped between the very tops of the teeth, and I still have the brown edges. I floss my teeth each day, and I neither smoke nor drink alcohol, strong tea or coffee and I don’t eat much spicy food. I’ve tried a polishing paste, but still the stain remains in between my teeth (my teeth do not overlap). I need something like an abrasive matrix strip to get between the teeth and get the stain off. Do you know of such a product and where I could obtain it? Sorry for the long explanation!

I wish to have my teeth straight as normal.

Monday, March 30th, 2009
Q.
Hi Mate, Im currently with free NHS dentists. i am currently at the age of 17. My bottom teeth are stragih howevery they are slightly yellow. How ever my major concern is the top teeth. everything is sort of straight how ever my canines (3rd from each side -middle) are big to fit in their gap and are overlapping the other teeth on each side of them. . I wish to have my teeth straight as normal. However my rubbish NHS dentists say i will have to remove 2 on my teeth and that is what i wish not to do. Please can you provide me with more information and the prices for the type of treatment i may need. Cheers

I need a filling for my bottom teeth which is chipped

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q.
I am 14 years of age. And my teeth are really good the way that they are set out but the straightness really upsets me and knocks my confidence big time. My top teeth are good its more my bottom one’s as between the two main ones there is a slight chip which i would like filling in so it goes away. And one of my teeth next to one of the main ones has a bit out of it and i would like that sorting out same goes for the tooth on the other side. Would this cost anything. Please get back to me. Thank you very much.

Fixed braces were removed too soon causing the overbite to return

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q.
I have a 15 year old daughter who was referred to my local orthodontist practice with an overbite. They attached fixed braces to her teeth which they removed within 4 months. After which they gave my daughter plastic retainer to wear at night. But the retainers became mottled and stained so when i asked for new oes the practice said only at a charge of £40 which at the time I could not afford. Subsequently my daughter discontinued wearing the retainers and now her overbite has returned to it original state. I believe the fixed braces were removed far too early in treatment and had no knowledge that it was her one and only chance to have them free of charge and now I’ll have to pay to have them refixed which I cannot afford. Were’nt the practice at fault for removing them in haste and not fully explaining the situation. My daughter is sad/distressed at the state of her teeth and her fellow classmates have had fixed braces for 18 plus months not just 4months. Please could you advise me many thanks.

Will NHS fund the metal crowns for my front and back teeth?

Sunday, March 29th, 2009
Q.
Hi, I wonder if you can help answer my question. I have Sjogren’s syndrome (now being successfully treated) which has caused extensive enamel erosion and badly damaged many of my teeth. My dentist has recommended crowning approximately 7 teeth, including both incisors and molars.I am exempt from nhs charges due to disability, however he tells me that I will have to pay approx £300 per tooth crowned unless I am willing to have metal(gold) crowns.I want to clarify the nhs position on repairing severely damaged teeth re porcelain/white crowns – your own site and other DOH information seems to suggest that these are available in this kind of situation? Also to clarify, if not, is it possible for me as a patient to “top up” the cost of providing the metal crowns(i believe £198) which the nhs would cover, to allow me to have the porcelain/white ones? many thanks
