Would Invisalign work on front teeth that lean inwards where teeth either side stick out?

Tuesday, February 15th, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr Hughes, my two front teeth lean inward and the teeth either side stick out. Sounds awful doesn’t it! Do you think that Invisalign could correct this? I had orthodontic work as a child but it didn’t work very well! I am 37.
With many thanks for your help.
Kind regards

I am due to have 4 teeth removed for orthodontics, is this excessive?

Friday, February 11th, 2011
Q.

I have had separate assessments for Invisalign and Incognito lingual braces to correct an overlap of upper front teeth and misalignment of lower front teeth. Both assessments have come back saying that four teeth need to be extracted – one in each of the four ‘corners’ of the mouth – prior to fitting of the appliance in order for it to work. This seems rather drastic and I cannot imagine that the gaps left by the removal of such large teeth will be closed by the realigned teeth, although the orthodontist who did the Incognito assessment has said they there will be no gaps at the end of treatment (which could take up to 22 months). I’ve booked to have the extractions done next wek, but I’m really still not very happy about having perfectly healthly teeth removed for this purpose. Does it sound right that I have to take such drastic action to get the smile that I want? (I’m in my 40s).

After my Invisalign treatment I need a bonded retainer, which is best?

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
Q.

I guess this is a question for an Orthodontist.

I am doing my second lot of orthodontic treatment using invisalign. I originally had orthodontic treatment, at the age of 18-20 to close large gaps and reduce protuding teeth. Due to not wearing the retainer properly (my fault) and also the age and severity of my initial problem my teeth relapsed slightly.
My dentist at the time explained that given my age/problem it was likely I would always have some degree of spaces in my teeth but I hate them hence the repeat treatment. I am now 29 and had noted that even now they still appear to be moving back slowly (hence why I started repeat orthodontic treatment).

My new Orthodontist explained following my invisalign treatment it would be advisable for me to have a bonded retainer fitted. It was explained that there are few health concerns around this.

However further research by myself has raised further questions:

a) I read that they cannot be fitted to the top teeth, although this is the plan for where they will be bonded as that is where the main relapse is. Is it true they can only be bonded to lower teeth for bite issues?

b)It appears hygiene concerns are more of an issue that my (and other) dentists have lead me to believe?

c) I am aware of the V-Loop retainer which permits flossing. My orthodontist is unaware of this method but says from the description he would have greater concerns about food being pushed up to and trapped by the gum line.
I wanted more info on that because from little I have found on V-loop retainers they seem better for hygiene reasons and I wonder if I can have another Orthodontist fix the bonded retainer.

Sorry for the length of this and thanks in advance for your response!

I have TMJD and my dentist recommended Invisalign, do you think that this would help?

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
Q.

Dear Dr. Hughes, I have TMJD for the past 3 years from getting my 1st crown put on and it took over 2 hours. My jaws from a CT scan look good no damage. The dentist I see now and have been seeing ever since the last dentist did my crown work suggests that I try Invisalign braces. He has made me a mouth guard but I have a hard time using it at night as it creates a suction with my cheeks and causes them to be sore with white lines. I am in pain and swelling everyday. He said that my bite if off. My teeth hit my left side of the tongue a lot causing more swelling in the mouth. Also in one place my upper teeth are hitting the lower teeth, a high bite, causing terrible pain and he has to file down the teeth to correct it. I have this done now about every 4 months because my bite is off. I clench my teeth during stressful times without me knowing it. I tighten up my jaw/facial muscles when I am stress which happens to be a lot due to the pain. At night I clench. My jaw jerks sideways sometimes especially when I am nervous. That makes my teeth slam into each other causing more pain. I am a light sleeper and I wake up with a jerk and my jaw jerks violently sideways or clamps down very hard. My dentist thinks fixing the bite with Invisalign braces will correct the bite which in turn will correct these other problems. I can have any metal in my mouth due to allergy to the metal. I do not want the Invisalign braces to make my TMJ worse. Do you know if they can help like in my case. He also said the Invisalign braces acts like a mouth guard too which is good for me. He is very nice and gentle with me. What would your advice be for my situation. Most of my teeth are straigth except I have a over bite, my 2 upper front teeth cross over a little from me sucking my thumb when I was little, and a little crowding on the upper and lower teeth. I have only 1 crown on the left upper back side. My TMJD is only on the left side after my crown was put in. All my silver fillings have been replace with white fillings due to allergy to metal now. No gum disease or bleeding. Pretty healthy mouth except for the bite being off. My tongue gets bite a lot and so it is swollen a lot too with pain. I hope you will be able to email me back as I see him next week for the start of the braces.

Hi I have an overbite, would I be eligible for Invisalign?

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011
Q.

Hey there,

I want to know if I am eligible for Invisalign. I know it is very hard and vague but I have an overbite pretruding 5/6mm from the lower arch to the tip of the upper arch teeth. I prefer Invisalign to traditional metal braces as it is more comfortable. Would you be able to give me an idea of the pricing structure for overbites and their eligibility. It is a priority that I know I’m eligible before treaking out to a cosmetic dentist.

I look forward to your response.

Can Invisalign be used to move my teeth back into position?

Monday, January 31st, 2011
Q.

Hi,

I need to know if I qualify for the invisalign braces. Due to a missing tooth on my lower right jaw, a couple of teeth moved back. I was told that I need braces and possibly an implant to replace missing tooth. How much will it cost? Do I qualify? Thanks
