Should I have the infected tooth removed and replaced with a dental implant?

Friday, September 3rd, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Moore Last year, One of my top teeth (the 3rd tooth toward the back starting with the canine) was re-crowned, the root canal retreated and an infection treated as well. 8 months later I have another infection and I’m due to see a specialist to see if the infection can be treated. The tooth has a post that cannot be removed. If the infection cannot be treated, the tooth will have to be removed. If it’s possible, would you say that it’s worth to clear the infection (by lifting the gum) knowing that it could be recurrent, or should I have it removed and and an implant placed? My dentist charges £4500 for an implant and I cannot pay that for one implant. What would you say the cost for an implant with a good dentist should be in London? What are the main questions I should ask when looking for another dentist that specialises in placing implant? I would really appreciate your help?,

Monday, August 23rd, 2010
Q.
I had a infection in a tooth I was given some antibiotics and was told i needed a root canal filling (?) by a private dentist. I then went to see a NHS dentist who told me that the tooth was fine and it did not need a filling… both took x-rays of the tooth? I have no pain at the moment so who do I belive.. regards,

When i had the 4 prepared and had temps one of them was very sensitive, and whilst having the crowns fitted it was very painful, which i explained to my dentist. A dentist told my wife that she will lose all her upper front teeth. Could you please advise us regarding the nature of cosmetic procedures involved in treating this type of condition?

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010
Q.
hi My wife has just been told by a dentist that she will loose all her upper front teeth. This is due to a flea bite on her gum, which became infected, and has attacked the teeth roots and bone of her upper jaw. The dentist told her that cosmetic surgery to address this problem would be extremely expensive, and that dentures are the only practical solution. At the moment all her teeth are still firm, and her mouth looks completely normal. Could you please advise us regarding the nature of cosmetic proceedures involved in treating this type of condition, and their likely cost. Regards,

Do I have a choice concerning where I can have my implant fitted after I have my tooth removed by my regular dentist?

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
Q.
I have a molar in my lower right jaw with an infection in/below the root canal. The tooth is crowned and has been infected and recrowned previously. My dentist and I are agreed that the tooth must go! Antibiotic treatment is making me feel unwell and not solving the pain problem completely – I am now in my second week of high-dose antibiotics, having been changed from penicillin to Clindamycin today – and I would like to lost the tooth asap. I hope to have an implant to replace this tooth/crown and have been told that I would be suitable for one. My own dentist (A) does not perform implants, but has told me that the dentist at my practice who does (B) would like to extract my problem tooth himself to see how it “sits”, etc. I have two problems with this: i) dentist B does not want to take the tooth out at the moment and ii) I am not sure that I feel confident about dentist B conducting the implant procedure. Can I decide where to have my implant performed after my own dentist, dentist A, has extracted the offending tooth?,

I pulled and my baby tooth. The new tooth had stopped growing and the tooth’s turned black. Do I have tooth rot?

Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010
Q.
At 15, I still had a few baby teeth left, one was loose, and so I pulled it out, which I know was a bad idea, but it was annoying. The whole tooth came out, and a new one grew in it’s place, however, the growth has stopped just above gum level. Over the last 2 years, the tooth appears to have turned black, and when I press my finger to the gum, I’ve noticed it smells, but it does not affect my breath at all. I mentioned it to my dentist once, but she said she would keep an eye on it, and it was nothing to worry about. My dentist hasn’t mentioned anything about it since, and I suffer none of the pain regarded with tooth rot.,
