What Choices Are Available To Me, Regarding A Cracked Tooth?

Friday, June 14th, 2013
Q.

Hi Doctor Patel. I wondered if you could help me? Unfortunately, I have cracked one of my teeth (bottom row, right at the back). The crack is across the top of the tooth but it is not causing me any pain at the moment. I know if I don’t get it seen to it could become infected or it may even die.  I have made a dentist appointment but I wanted to know what choices should be available to me? I would like to know because I know cosmetic work can be quite costly. So I need to know how much money I am likely to be paying. I also work, so it would be great to know how many appointments I’ll have to make in order to have this problem fixed. Thank you for your time.

Will The NHS Subsidise My Dental Implant Fees Because Of My Job?

Wednesday, June 12th, 2013
Q.

Many years ago I had an eye tooth removed and the teeth left and right of it were crowns. To fill the gap left by the eye tooth I had the crowns either side of it removed and a triple crown replaced it with the missing eye tooth. About six months ago the triple crown snapped off completely at gum level leaving just the roots in the gum. The triple crown has been replaced on three occasions using a series of pins, but keeps coming out. I am told by my dentist that the only way of overcoming this is to have the roots removed and implants put in. Of course we are now talking about three implants which at around £1700.00 each is something I just cannot afford. Unfortunately this is now affection me psychologically, as my job as a Premises Manager at a local secondary school means I am in constant contact with members of staff, teachers, parents and contractors. I also have to attend meetings with the head and governors all of which is making me very self conscious of my missing teeth, to the point that I am where I can, avoiding contact. I just wondered on this basis if any costs of possible implants would be met by the NHS given the role I have to play in my school, as this is beginning to affect how I do my job.

What Portion Of My Teeth Would Be Discarded If I Went For Crowns?

Wednesday, May 1st, 2013
Q.

Hello doc. I am 37 yrs old .my front two teeth are not only bigger in size when compared to others but they are inclined a bit forward too.At this age I don’t want to go for braces or total cosmetic change.can contouring of these teeth be done? According to my local dentist my teeth are otherwise healthy .but one of the upper incisor has crowning, right-side of the upper
jaw (canine) was missing , so here is a bridging too. My main concern is an overbite because of the two teeth.and if I opt for the cosmetic change like crown of the upper central teeth, how much of the original teeth will be discarded
Please guide me on this.
Thank you.

I Am Unhappy With My New Crown, Can It Be Fixed?

Monday, April 29th, 2013
Q.

I had a crown on one of my front teeth 15 days back. My tooth had got discolored & it was recommended that I get a crown. I went to my usual family doc who had done my braces earlier. But I’m very unhappy with the crown. she ground my tooth n then gave me a first crown which was a complete disaster. I asked her to replace it at any cost. She did that and it was better than the previous one but I’m not completely happy. it is protruding a bit near the fit at gums & i feel it is a little bigger & bit rounder than my adjacent tooth. The crown has a metal inside. she said that my gums would grow over the joints near the crown & it would look normal but i feel very awkward to smile 🙁 please suggest what to do. I have spoken to her about this & she says this is how one tooth crown would look & everybody who gets one tooth front cap will look the same. Please help. Thanks in advance!

Can my dental implant and crown be fitted on the same day?

Wednesday, March 20th, 2013
Q.

Hello,

I have heard of several clinics where a single dental implant including the finished crown is completed within a day by a team of dentists and technicians all at the same location. I have read your website information on dental implants and it described the work taking place over a number of visits .
in your opinion what would be the pros and cons for a suitable candidate with no prior problems?

For my painful third molar should I get the tooth removed or get a crown?

Friday, December 21st, 2012
Q.

Dear Respected Dr Safeer Butt,

I am in immense pain and was very lucky to come across your highly informative, very caring and educating article/ web page.

I am by no means a person who knows teeth or their issues. I am almost 45 years old , diabetic for 10+ years. and have taken just modest care of my teeth. But I was blessed with a simple dietary style and a good mother who breast fed me ( I have heard and believe that breast feeding does provide good teeth and good development of bones and muscles in mouth)

I go to doctors and dentists regularly, I get regular cleaning / scaling and dental exams, since I am a disabled person , I get basic dental coverage .
In June and July 2012 , I had lot of dental issues , dentist did procedure , fillings, but now ever since June I have unbearable sensitivity .

Now I am out , of my country, I am with no dental coverage, all of a sudden I am in unbearable pain, and I can clearly see that my third molar from upper right is aching, feeling broken, tender, in burning pain, and loose
What should I do, If I approach a dentist , here , while I am out of US , should I get the tooth out , should I get a crown, is there any thing that a very very proficient and concerned dental surgeon like you would advice. should I pass the time by using pain killers till I get back,

I would very anxiously wait for your help and feed back

Thanking You

Is it likely that the cost of porcelain veneers will rise?

Wednesday, January 4th, 2012
Q.

I have broken and worn front teeth either from grinding or acid erosion over the years, and I am considering porcelain veneers. Given that the treatment is expensive, and that the veneers only last 5 to 10 years, is the cost of replacements likely to be comparable to the initial treatment ? My fear is that although I might be able to find the funds for the initial treatment, i could end up being locked into unaffordable treatments into my old age ?

Have I made the right choices concerning my damaged front teeth?

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011
Q.

I recently broke two of my front teeth in an accident and so far I have had to have 1 removed as it couldnt be saved and currently it has been replaced with a temporary cap which is attached to 3 post. This tooth that has to be removed currently still has the roots and my denstist has already killed off all the nerves before replacing it with the temporary fixture as mentioned above.

On the second tooth which is one of the two front ones,it broke half way which my dentist has fixed with some filling materials that has covered the broken part. After a month from this treatment, I have had to return to get a root canal treatment on this tooth as it was giving me a lot of problems. My dentist after hearing my description of the pains as well as my xrays had given me two options which was to do a root canal or provide me with some antibiotics for a couple of months to see the reaction. I had opted for a root canal as I thought that down the line I will probably have to get it done anyway as my teeth had broken half way and the nerves had been exposed. Now I dont know if I had made the right decision by opting for a root canal this early and the thought of having to deal with discolorations etc had been really disheartening. Please advise if I did make the right choice, I am awaiting my next round of review so I could get it crowned and I wondering if it is also a good idea to get it crowned this early as the current fixture placed on it is not giving me to much problems.

My last question is this, according to my dentist the tooth that he has removed which I had mentioned above can be replaced with a crown that can attach to middle tooth that I had broken which will also be crowned. he has suggested that I pull out the root and have this procedure done. Is this the same as having a bridge??furthermore I had wanted a post and core done but he had advised against it as there hasnt been much teeth left after he had pulled it out and whatever is left is above the gum line and any post and core treatment will require that they pill off part of the gum to get it done. I had sort a second opinion from another dentist and he had advised that it could be possible to still do a post and core. Now I am confused as to what I need to get done. I want something done so that I wont have to worry about it falling off or giving me any problems in the next few years and so therefore would appreciate any advise that could give me some comfort and direction on what procedure to undertake before I make any decisions. Thanks
