I had two front teeth knocked out

Monday, November 10th, 2008
Q.
I had two front teeth (one of the very front upper pair and the one next to it further away from the centre)knocked out in an accident three years ago. I am 24 and female. The teeth were put straight back in, but despite root canal work, they have not taken properly. I am told I need two implants, but wondered if one single implant might support two teeth and give a better cosemtic appearance. Also, if I need bone implants, will I have to pay privately for this?

my dentist suggested that i start with invisalign

Thursday, November 6th, 2008
Q.
Hiya, my dentist has just suggested that i start with invisalign. at a cost of almost £3000. i’m 19 and currently unemployed so that is a huge cost to me. I have some sort of problem (which i will be seeing a doctor about asap) which means i cannot breath through my nose very well so i tend to breath through my mouth and have done as long as i can remember. i have been told that this is the reason for the dental problems i have. i have a narrow top jaw which caused 2 of my teeth (the ones either side of my 2 front teeth) to come through behind the front ones. i had orthodontic treatment beginning with an expandable retainer from age 10 (i was made fun of because i couldnt talk around it so i often took it out) after some time i then had fixed braces which for a while had a spring in the roof of my mouth in order to expand it a little more i think. after just under a year with those on (the elastic band kind) they were removed and i had lovely straight teeth…. for about 2 weeks, maybe a month before the two offending teeth began to move back again i had another chunky plastic/wire retainer which i did wear and my orthodontist reduced the time i had to wear it towards the end of my treatment (every other day… just nights etc) my teeth now are nowhere near as bad as they were originally, i just have a slight crossbite involving those two teeth, but i really wish they were straight again. i saw in one of your other answers about permenant retainers, like a wire stuck behind the teeth to prevent them moving, my cousin in america has one of those and i always thought i should have had that done too since my teeth had moved so drastically and i feared they’d be more likely to move back. i was never offered the option to have a permenant retainer else i surely would have gone for it. should i have been? i also wonder if the breathing problem may have had some impact on whether or not my teeth moved after treatment? is £3000 (i think it might have been £2800 but even so) a reasonable price for my treatment and is it worth doing or will my teeth just move again? i do hope you can offer some guidance, many thanks.

I really want to straighten a gap in my teeth

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008
Q.
I really want to straighten a gap in my teeth which has bothered me for years, I heard about invisalign from my dentist but he quoted me a price in the region of 4000 pounds which is not something I can afford. A clinic running a special offer have quoted less than half that but want me to pay up front. Is this a bit dodgey? Would I be better to save and go with someone who is charging the normal price rather than gamble on the cheaper option? This is still a massive amount of money for me.

I was totally dental phobic as a child due to bad

Monday, November 3rd, 2008
Q.
I was totally dental phobic as a child due to bad expereinces at the dentist with tooth extractions and, as a consequence, I never wore a brace. Now, as a result, I have severely crowded teeth. The 4 front teeth (incisors?) aren’t really affected and are relatively straight but the canine teeth stick out Dracula-like to the extent that I can’t bite on them at all and they poke through my lips if I smile. There is really very little gap between the second insisors and the premolars next to them and the canines stick out above them. Can anything be done for me? I don’t want to wear a brace at my age (early 40s) and think my only hope is to have the canines removed and try to do something with the remaining teeth. My teeth really are the bane of my life and have made my life a complete misery over the years. It seems to be getting worse lately and is making me quite depressed and is having a real negative effect on my life to the point that I feel quite depressed most of the time. They are on my mind constantly and I have no one to really share all this anxiety with as I feel so embarrassed about my teeth I won’t draw attention to them. I even change the subject if anyone so much as mentions teeth! I feel that if I could get my teeth fixed all this would stop and I could finally enjoy my life and actually smile and not feel scared or embarrassed to smile. Nowadays, I read about all the marvellous advances in cosmetic dentistry and I think more and more that a few thousand pounds spent on my teeth would be money well spent if it made me feel that my life was worth living. To me, to have teeth that I didn’t feel embarrassed to show the world would be better than wining the lottery. Can you help or advise?
