Can I not get braces if I have gum disease?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q.
Dear Dr Caplan, I am a 23yr old female with severe gum disease. As a teen I had been initially refused orthodontic treatment on the NHS, due to the poor condition of my gums. I had lost faith in my dental care and hid away from my dental problems. As an adult I now realise how much my teeth have affected me mentally. I am so depressed about my crowded and crooked teeth, I find it hard to talk to people let alone smile incase they notice my ugly teeth. I have become a social recluse and feel so alone because of being scared to show my teeth. Since my teens I have had a patchwork of different work done by different dentists and my mouth now looks a mess. There are badly fitted miscoloured crowns on my UL2 and UR1. However, my gums have improved a lot. They are now a pinkier shade, compared with the liver red that it used to be. Also, the teeth and gums are a lot less sensitive. Do you think that there is any chance that I could get treated privately? Will private dentists/orthodontists refuse to treat me due to my gum disease? Or is that just an excuse for the NHS to refuse me due to their overstretched waiting lists? I am grateful for your reply, as I feel so lost and desperately want to sort out my teeth once and for all.,

I am unhappy with veneers treatment received abroad

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q.
Hello I recently had veneers fitted on my front 4 teeth in India however I am not happy with them. They feel too big for my mouth and I feel like they stick out further than my teeth should. They are much bigger than my original teeth Although if necessary I will pay for new veneers I was wondering if there is any other solution you could suggest? Many Thanks,

I can see dark coloured teeth through veneers. What can be done?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q.
when i was a child i self harmed my teeth in that i deliberately did not take care of them for a few years. This was due to pschological trauma. i took all the enamel off and the front teeth were about as yellows as you can get. this i ovbviously came to regret. recently i maged to get porcelain venners done, However the teeth that were the darkest yellow still appear to be a shade of yellow as if its showing through. Is ithis possible because i am very distressed. i had the top 8 teeth done one of the back of the 8 appears to show little bit of yellow on the top also,

My dentist tells me that I have to lose two adjacent teeth on the lowwer jaw right at the back (not wisdom teeth because they never came through). Can I have implants to replace these at a later date or should they be done at the same time as extraxtion?,

Can you reccomend a dentist in west midlands for lumineers?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q.
Hi Rob, I am 36 years old and am considering getting cosmetic dentistry (Lumineers) done. I have gaps in my upper front teeth and would like them closed. However I also have receding gums, so do not want anything done until this has stabilised. Ideally im looking for a one stop shop where I can go for this treatment but I need to take costs into account and ideally looking for someone in the west midlands, Birmingham if possible, although for a recommended clinic I can travel furthe. I was wondering if you could kindly recommend a clinic or specialist that specializes in periodontics (possibly gum grafting) and cosmetic surgery. Thanks,

Is there a cheap orthodontic option?

Thursday, January 14th, 2010
Q.
Hello, I have had 2 consultations now regarding orthodontic treatment with 2 different dentists. I have been told that what i want to achieve is a minor case. But clearstep or invisalign are coming out very expensive and fixed braces a little less. Could a minor case not be treated with a removable appliance to reduce cost, or are there and other alternatives at a lower cost? Many Thanks,
