Ive a reacurring abcess under one of my teeth can you advise

Saturday, September 26th, 2009
Q.
Hi, I have had an reacurring abcess under one of my teeth for quite some time now (approx 3-4 years) when i say reacurring its proberbly never healed fully, when its ok the dentist says its very very small. the molar is in my lower right hand side jaw (T6 or number 19 I think) I have had two root canals done to the tooth one at first signs of symptoms and another 1-2 years ago, the tooth has a gold inlay on top of a special epoxy resin material as over two thirds of the visible tooth has been destroyed. Two weeks ago I went on holiday and the abcess flared up again for reasons unknown, I could not get medial treatment for around 5 days, as you can imagine it was quite painfull. After getting treatment (clyndamycin and nimesulide) the abcess subsided. Upon returning to the uk and seeing my dentist he has given me amoxycillin and a codine/nsaid treatment and said I “may” have a cracked or fractured root causing the abcess to not heal fully, and he suggested that removing the tooth is the best soloution. Now I do not want to get the tooth removed but the dentist says I have a quarter of an inch of material under the root and if the abcess gets down to that depth (the main nerve I think) in future it could cause more problems. Plus he has said the germs in the abcess might get resistant to the antibiotics. I know I could have done more to aid the tooth in healing and I try but wen the pain is gone i soon go back to my old habits (smoking/drinking) and I am a VERY bad tooth grinder at night (well my girlfriend tells me anyway) I am thinking that my bad habits have caused my abcess not to heal as much as anything? I there any alternatives I can try maybe an antibiotic targeted specifically at the germs in my abcess as I understand amoxycillin is a broad-spectrum drug and as such might not have enough punch to knock out a germ that might be getting resistant to it? the only alternatives I have are a dental bridge which would sacrifice a healthy tooth (the other one is filled) or a dental implant which would be two thousand pound according to my dentist. Thanks for reading my long winded question

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009
Q.
Five months ago I had one of my front teeth removed and a partial pallet fitted. Two days ago I started getting pain in my cheek and now my cheek is swollen. If I smile or try to move my mouth I have severe pain in my cheek and along my top jaw. I am just assuming I have an abcess or infection. I have no actual pain in my teeth. I am terrified of Dentist’s could you please advise me what I should do.

I woke up this morning with a constant throbbing sensation in my front tooth. This tooth 20 years ago I had a root canal performed on it. I had no pain in this tooth prior to when I woke up. It is CONSTANT it feels like pressure on my gums? The surrounding gum of my front tooth does not look infected nor do any of my surrounding teeth in pain. Very Strange! please provide guidance thanks!

i had root canal work on my tooth but the pain persists plz advice?

Friday, September 11th, 2009
Q.
Dear Dr Moore 6 months ago I had root canal work on my tooth, having been told that there was some decay and I would lose the tooth if I did not have it. It was a terrible ordeal for me as I am a very nervous patient anyway and the dentist clamped my face to my jaw with a metal clamp which I found unacceptable and was unable to tolerate. It took 3 hours and cost over £600. A few days ago I started to have an unremitting pain in my mouth, gums and cheek which seem to be encompassing the area where I had the root canal work. I fear from all the information I have been able to glean that I have an abscess and may have to lose the tooth. I have been to see my GP who doesn’t know what is causing the pain but has given me antibiotics and told me to see my dentist for ex-rays. I have an appointment on Tuesday but don’t see any point in having the ex-rays until the antibiotics have cleared up the infection. I will not go back to the dentist who did the root canal treatment (a specialist in root canal work and not my usual dentist) as I am absolutely terrified of him. The way he pulled and clamped my face showed complete inconsideration for a woman’s feelings and when I finally emerged from the dentist after 3 hours I was inconsolable from the ordeal that I had tolerated. If I do lose my tooth I will definitely want to have an implant. I am now on my 3rd day of taking antibiotics and as of yet the pain I am suffering is just as bad as on day one so I am not sure if they are working or not. Please would you kindly advise me of my options regarding treatment and what you see as the likely outcome. Kind regards,

I have abscess above my 4 front teeth should i get them extracted?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009
Q.
I am 28 and my dentist has just told me that after 2 x-rays that I have abcesses above my 4 top front teeth. He says at the moment the abcess appears to be draining into the mouth but will get worse in time. He says that it is unlikely the teeth can be saved and will need to come out and be replaced by a removable plate. The teeth cause me no problems at present. He says he can refer me to the hospital to see what they say if I want. Should I just accept my dentists reccommendation and have the teeth out now or wait until they cause me grief. Or should I ask to be referred to the hospital? Also I’d much rather have dental implants rather than a plate but he made no mention of this. Is this an option? Obviuosly I wouldn’t mind normally but having to have the top 4 front teeth out in a row is rather a shock.

Are dental implants a permanent alternatives for missing or removed teeth?

Saturday, August 29th, 2009
Q.
Hello, I was suffering from toothache a month or so ago – caused by an abscess, which in turn was caused by gum decease. Although I brush, floss and use mouthwash regularly; like many people: if it isn’t a problem, I don’t go to the dentist. And in my case, I hadn’t been to a dentist in over 20 years. I’ve been told that I’ll probably require a bridge… The thought of having to remove a false tooth for cleaning fills me with dread! If I have to have the tooth removed – and because it’s in a prominent place (lower front) are there any ‘permanent’ alternatives… ie. Fix and forget?
