my upper left wisdom tooth has decayed what is the option implant or be crowned

Q. I’m 47 and have had a phobia of dentists since I was 12. At this time I had four upper teeth extracted for orthodontic work. Unfortunately this left me with gaps in my upper teeth, not quite big enough for crowns. For the last 25 years I have gone every six months to a dentist I trust and have had some cosmetic work (mainly white fillings) I have always wanted a perfect smile, but my teeth seem healthy for my age (although some are quite heavily filled) and the whole effect is reasonably OK, and so I’ve put up with the gaps. Recently my upper left wisdom tooth has decayed and might need to be removed. Could you advise me what would be the best option? Could the root of this wisdom tooth be crowned, or would an implant be possible? Although not wealthy, I would be able to afford to pay for the work needed. The other problem is that I think my dentist, although professional and pleasant, is unlikely to understand my wish for cosmetic work because of my age. Your advice would be very welcome.

A. As it is a wisdom tooth, the best option is to have the tooth taken out. It will probably not be of much function- and to root treat the tooth is often unheard of in wisdom teeth. That isn’t to say that it can’t be done. It might just be a little trickier than normal teeth.
If you are wanting cosmetic treatment to close your gaps up, then orthodontic treatment may be the answer for you. Alternatively, veneers can also do the same thing. You ideally need to speak to a cosmetic dentist for your options regarding this. I would be more than happy to offer you a free consultation at my kissdental practice. Thanks for your enquiry.
