I have a crown that becomes infected every year

Q. I have a crown as a front incisor. About once a year in becomes infected and I need antibiotics. The dentist always takes a few days to provide antibiotics and I can be in a lot of pain. The dentist says that I have not choice other than to suffer this or have the crown removed – as the post attaching the crown is so fine. I am suspicious that he is only saying this because he does not have the expertise himself. The dentist who originally did the crown has died. I do not know how to find a dentist who can do this type of work – he was the best I could find after 3 tries with worse equipt practices an is located 60 miles away. I think it is very bad for my health to have so many antibioitcs. How can I find a good dentist?

A. A tooth that becomes infected on a regular basis requires proper treatment rather than antibiotics which act only a as temporary cure. There is a strong possibility that the tooth may need removal and replacement. I can only recommend that you try to seek out an experienced dentist perhaps using the ADI find a dentist service at www.adi.org
