How long would I have to wear retainer?

Q. Hi I was originally given a brace about 4 to 5 years ago but after a few months I stopped using it this was due to a few reasons including being scared of my orthodontist, but the main reason was that it was making me extremely irritable and agitated just after wearing for a few hours I would snap at people and want to just rip them out, as you can imagine this cause problems at home as no one understood how I was feeling and when i tried to explain just told me it didn’t make sense or look at me in a disbelieving way. I stuck it for as long as I could but I eventually got to the point where I could take it no longer, when I heard about the inman aligner I felt that this was the answer something that wouldn’t take to two years therefore allowing me to cope. I then read on the forum about a retainer after having the inman aligner and I was unsure whether this was a standard thing which everyone had or just certain cases I am also unsure as to how long on average would you have to wear this retainer? and is how i was feeling while wearing my brace something that happens with other patients? many thanks,
A. Retainers are for life, wearing them is comfortable for most people, but as you already point out, you may not be the average patient. Rob
