How long will I have to wear elastics as part of my orthodontic treatment?

Hello,
I got braces put on last october and i have just been given elastic bands to wear on my back teeth to my front; i got tols by a friend that elastic bands are the last part of orthodontic treatment, is this true? if so, if i wear my elastics 24/7 how long will it take for my braces to be taken off?

Elastics can indicate that your treatment is nearing the end, do check with your orthodontist as to when they estimate your braces can be removed.
