Is surgery necessary on my anterior open bite?

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011
Q.

I have had braces since September 2010 due correctdion of an open bite. I have only recently suffered with an open bite, the last 2 years, I am now 40 years of age. My Maxillofacial surgeon and Orthodontist are working towards me have surgery to resolve my open bite, whereby a part of my upper jaw bone is removed each side. I have had various tests to find the cause of this but have found nothing. Is the jaw surgery necessary or could my problem be related to my jaw joints not fitting together any longer and that’s where the problem has occurred?

Thanks

Can you advise what can be done about a gap between wisdom tooth where food gets stuck?

Wednesday, March 2nd, 2011
Q.

I have a small gap between a wisdom tooth and the adjacent tooth where food particles get stuck nearly every time I eat and it is uncomfortable and very irritating. A secondary problem with the same tooth is that food also gets stuck between it and the gum (on the opposite side of the gap). My dentist says the only solution is to extract the wisdom tooth. Can I do anything less dramatic such as dental bonding? I carry a 0.5mm TePe Interdental brush with me that helps keep my sanity but far from solves the problem.

Can I get treatment at dental schools?

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011
Q.

Dear Sirs

I have been having a lot of problems with my teeth for a quite a few years now and the NHS Dentist dont seem very helpful at all.

I would like to find out if there are any dental surgeon out there that are looking for people to help them gaining experience.

A bit about myself 30 year old female single mother and my teeth are just breaking off I have had a tooth removed and another just broke in 3 pieces I have had about 3 root canals and loads of fillings.

Went to my dentist last week because I was having pain on my tooth and I had a chipped tooth now he fixed the tooth I was having problems with but refused to wok on the tooth that had been chipped and asked me to return in 3 months and have work done on this tooth again another tooth has broken and I said you know my tooth broke he replied by saying that it will need to be removed but they cant do it until 3 months time so I am left with one broken tooth and another tooth which has been broken and not much of it left which is causing me pain now and I dont think I can wait 3 months to have this problem dealt with.

I have very difficulties in eating as both sides of my teeth are very sensitive and it hurts quite often when eating even if its an apple.

Please can you help me if there are any dentist schools I could join as I can not afford to pay private dental care

Many thanks for your time in reading this.

How do I know my dentist isn’t just trying to make money out of me?

Thursday, February 24th, 2011
Q.

Hi Dr Moore,

General question, how can I assess whether my dentist is looing after my teeth properly or simply attempting to make money out of me?

I’ve had about 18 months/2 years with no treatment, and now it seems everytime I go for a check up he decides to “replace fillings he is not happy with” even though they are not causing any pain. I also have an impacted wisdom tooth which he wanted to take out. I refused to have this done in the Dental surgery and asked for a referral to an NHS Hospital – once I got my appt there they said the tooth did not need to be removed.

All of this is making me rather concerned and loathe to return to my dentist. I also have some pain in my left upper molar which I have previously flagged to him. He insists that the tooth does not need a filling – however the cynic in me now feels that it could be he is waiting for it to decay badly so I’ll need a root canal @ £350 as opposed to filing the tooth now which makes him alot less.

Am I being too cynical and is my dentist just trying to provide preventative care? (all my fillings are white and I know these are not as long lasting as amalgam ones).
