Q. I was born with a discolouration on my teeth (a slightly yellowy checkered effect up close) due to how I passed through the birth canal or something like that! Would zoom whitening work on my teeth or would this only emphasise the problem? Thanks
A. hi many thanks for your email, with such intrinsic staining there are two outcomes with tooth whitening, the first is the problem will decrease and the staining will blend, the second outcome is that the whitening will emphisize the problem. the main concern is that until you try you wont know.
hope this is helpful.

Q. I have bonding, approx. 12 years old, on my two front teeth which are stained yellow. I am going to do an at-home whitening system. Do I need to wait 2 weeks after I’ve totally completed the whitening before I have the bonding replaced ? Thus, do I need to wait in order for my teeth to fully absorb & change color to the final “whiteness” in order to accurately match the bonding to the new white? Also, I’ve been told that I cannot do the ZOOM in office whitening because I have extremely sensitive teeth. Is this true as well?
A. Zoom is not advised for extremely sensitive teeth.
You should wait a week after finishing the whitneing before replacing the bonding to give them time to settle.

Q. i drink tea twice a day and over the years i have developed tea stains on my teeth what is the solution to get rid of the stains.
A. Ask your dentist to refer you to his hygienist to clean off as much of this staining as possible and then try some teeth whitening.

Q. Hi Dr. Glaister A question about teeth whitening – I was given tetracycline as a child when my permanent dentition was developing, and my teeth are now rather stained. Given that the staining appears to be within the tooth – rather than upon the surface of the enamel – is there any whitening procedure that I could have that would be effective? Many thanks
A.
Tooth whitening unfortunately is ineffective on tetracycline staining. The only thing you can so to change the colour of your teeth would be to Veneers them. Case 14 in my portfolio http://www.umbrellasmiles.com/portfolio.html is veneers placed for tetracycline staining.

Q. I had my teeth whitened and then had white composite to replace some fillings in between my teeth. The dentist used A1 shade. Can you tell me whether this means my teeth were whitened to a good degree (I’m 55) Thanks
A. A1 is a very light shade so I am sure you got a good result.

Q. I just started whitening my teeth with 44% carbamide peroxide gel I bought online. I’ve used it 4 times total… once a day for 5 minutes for the last 4 days. After the second use, I noticed my front tooth seemed to be chipped even though I hadn’t hit it on anything. Two more uses later, and the chip seems to be getting bigger. Everything I’ve read online says carbamide peroxide whiteners are safe and the worst side effect is tooth sensitivity, which I haven’t experienced. What is going on with my tooth?! Is it from the whitener??
A. I’m not sure whats happening here but I would advise you to go to your dentist to get it checked out in case it is something to do with the gel

Q. I am thinking of a home teeth whitening programme as my teeth are becoming more yellow with age but I have several small white fillings on my front top-bottom teeth(maybe 20-30%)what will happen to these will they whiten also or will I have to have them all re-done? Regards
A. If they are very small they can often be left. if the teeth whiten considerably and the fillings show, you may need to have them replaced.

Q. I have two questions I would like you to answer if you would be kind enough. 1 – When my 15 year old daughter had her fixed retainers removed last month, it became apparent that one of her front teeth was dark grey. It was the same colour as all her other teeth before orthodontic treatment. During treatment, following tightening of the retainers, she often had pain for a few days and also experienced bleeding in that area. As she has never fallen or hit that tooth, could it be the orthodontic treatment itself that caused this problem? 2 – The orthodontist referred her to our dentist who tested the tooth and says it is alive. She recommended tooth whitening (smile-x) on just that one tooth. Since the tooth is not stained, I don’t see how this will help. Surely, it will just make it look a lighter grey? The dentist said she will have to do this treatment every two months for the rest of her life, which is quite a commitment. I do not want her to have veneers. What would you recommend? Thank you for your time.
A. I’m not sure what the best thing to do is. I would try the whitening but use a small tray with whitening gel placed only on this tooth. Then she could wear the tray 1 night a month to keep the colour topped up??

Q. I am considering having my teeth whitened and am very confused as to which process is more effective i have read on this site that there are pro’s and cons to both zoom and laser treatment but are wanting to know which is more effective and longer lasting, my mum has had zoom done in the US and have seen the great results but I dont know anyone who has had the new laser one can you give me any advise or where to look to help me choose? kind regards
A. many thanks for your email, the new zoom laser which is called zoom advanced whitening, the laser is more affective than the older one and i feel the results you would get from either the old zoom laser and the new one are comparable. the other option would be to go for a non laser treatment like enlighten whitening which is a home treatment system but the results are amazing. the option is your.

Q. Hi Rob, I am considering in-surgery whitening and wondered if you could advise on the best products/procedure available? (highest quality/results possible) How long it lasts? A good cost benchmark etc? My teeth are in good shape so i have ruled out veneers as i think whitening will give me the results i’m after. In particular i have heard of a “bio” laser treatment but have found very little info (I assume then that this is just the normal Zoom style treatment of gel + laser). I am based in Birmingham so would appreciate any recommendations for a surgery to go to! Many thanks in anticipation of your help! Regards
A. Zoom! advance power is the best surgery product that I have come across. There is more competition in the home systems. Q. Hi, I have some staining on my teeth from my braces – the staining is little circles and looks like it’s from the glue which was used to fix the brace on. I wanted to get my teeth whitened but I am worried the rest of the tooth will be whiter and the stain will just look worse. Is this something which generally I should be worried about or os this sort of thing generally corrected wiothout problem? (I appreciate that you will no be able to give a specific answer without a consult)
A. If your brace is off the teeth probably just need a polish and any residual cement removed

Q. My 10 yr old son is about get braces in Dec. his front teeth are very discolored. I was considering getting his teeth whitened. should I do it before or after the braces?
A. He is probably too young for whitening at the moment and it would be best done after the brace treatment anyway.

Q. About 2 years ago my dentist made me a set of trays to use for teeth whitening. I used the whitening gel he provided and was very pleased with the result. I would like to treat my teeth again but my dentist will charge me £25 for a 1.3mg syringe of Polanight 13% peroxide gel. I can buy four syringes of the same product on the internet for about £34. Would it be safe/sensible for me to buy it in this way? Is this a good product or could you recommend a better one?
A. I am always a bit dubious of internet phamaceuticals. there is so many fakes outthere. Carbamine peroxide gels are usually best. some peroxide gels are ok with supervision. Rob

Q. I recently used a home teeth whitening kit that apparently is dental grade. I trimmed back the teeth trays to the gum line as recommended but after using it only 3 times (for a third of the recommended time), I was horrified to find my gums have receeded completely and noticable back, as though they have been burnt off. It does not hurt. Is this normal?! Will they grow back? Should I ever use the product again? Please help! I am very worried about this. Thank you very much.
A. I don’t think these type of home kits are very safe or work that well. You will be much better to have a custom professionally made tray for the whitening gel, made by your dentist.

Q. i have had zirconium caps fitted for my two top front teeth because i broke them in a childhood accident.the caps were originally selected to match the rest of my teeth.i now want to whiten my teeth, so i wanted to know will the zirconium caps also get whitened along with the other teeth? if not,how can i get all of them whitened and matching each other.please reply
A. Crowns won’t whiten so if you want to match the teeth you will have to have the crowns replaced at the end of the whitening if the difference is very obvious.
