I am 27 and am unsure if braces or veneers are best of my condition, what do you suggest?

Q.

Hello Dr Patel.

I am hoping that you can advise me with regard to my enquiry. I am 27 years of age and never had braces fitted as a child.

During childhood when second set/adult teeth were coming through one of my incisors erupted through roof of mouth behind my canine and was putting pressure on it and pushing it forward or outwards.

Due to this I had that tooth extracted and was advised by my dentist to have a fixed brace fitted to straighten my teeth.

Now, many years on I have realised that I should have had it done but because I didn’t I have misaligned teeth now where my 2 front incisors are offset and are actually not in the centre of my mouth but a whole tooth over to the left where the removed incisor should have been. I now have 5 teeth that are visible on top jaw instead of an even number of six (canine and incisors).

This has caused me great misery as I have not smiled with my teeth in a photo for over 10 years as they look out of line and are odd. Recently I went to visit an Orthodontist and was told that with a fixed appliance or brace I could have the 2 incisors moved to the centre of my mouth to line up with nose but in order to achieve this, the other remaining incisor that would have been paired with the extracted incisor would have to be removed also.

This essentially would cause a gap between my incisor and canine so that my 2 front teeth can be pulled into new position via brace and give me symmetry which is what I want.

My concern is that with a tooth missing (approx 8mm) is it really possible for a brace to shift that gap closed and pull my teeth to centre?

Surely due to the fact that I am 27 years of age and all adult teeth have come through and jaw bone has stopped growing that the bone is set solid and it is impossible to close a gap where a tooth has been removed?

I am getting mixed opinion and being told that a brace simply cannot achieve this and I would have to have either an implant to disguise the gap or have veneers fitted to mask the fact that my 2 front incisors are offset.

Also, I have a deep bite and was told even before tooth extraction I would have to be much patient and have a fixed metal brace on lower teeth to correct the bite and lift up teeth so that end result will be satisfactory.

What are my options and will braces fix the removed tooth and shift the teeth to create a balanced smile?

Thank you.

I have a big gap in my front teeth, what is the best way to close it?

Q.

Hello, i’m 17 and have quite a big gap in my front two teeth and the teeth either side also have a slight gaps. 3years ago my dentist told me that the gaps would close naturally quite soon, but nothings happpened. I really hate smiling in photos as I hate showing my teeth. the bottom row are fine. to give a rough idea, my teeth are similar to how the 1st womans were on your portfolio and i’d like to have my teeth like hers are now. I’ve heard veneers would be good, but don’t last long and can crack easily. what would you think the cheapest ways are to fix the gap? can i permenatley get rid of the gap or will it always be there? thankyou

My dentist tells me that I have very few options to close the gaps in my mouth which missing teeth have left, could you give me any suggestions?

Q.

Hi, I have a gap in my front teeth that has bothered me for ages, but when I’ve asked my dentist about whether they could close the gap they said it would leave me with a bigger gap somewhere else as I am also missing my 2nd set of incisors, and the gap in my front teeth stop me from having gaps there. I’m only 19 so really just want to know if it would be viable to give me normal looking teeth, or wether I am just clutching at straws.

-Thanks & Kind Regards.

My teeth have drifted after having both braces and crowns fitted and the tooth under the crown has turned black, what are my options?

Friday, April 8th, 2011
Q.

When i was younger I had my front tooth knocked out after a cap and a root canal I was eventually given a denture. When I was old enough to have braces I had braces to close the gap in the front and to use my second tooth (lateral incisor) as a front tooth and put a crown on it.
11 years later the crown has decreased in size, the tooth has drifted and it’s a totally different shape to my other tooth so now I have a big gap in the middle, it’s too big for 1 tooth alone but not big enough for 2 teeth. The prepared tooth under the crown has also gone blackish. what would you suggest would be the best option for me to get a nice gap free smile back!

What options do I have for filling in gaps between my front teeth?

Thursday, April 7th, 2011
Q.

Hi,

So I’ve got gaps between my 4 front, upper teeth. I’ve always had them, my brother and sister have them too, but they also have much smaller mouths than me so their gaps are nearly non-existent and barely noticeable.

I’ve spoken to a cosmetic dentist about closing these gaps in the past, but the cost has put me off. I’m very eager to get this sorted out as it’s killing my self confidence and stopping me from smiling.

usually Veneers would be enough to close the gaps, I would require 4, one on each of the teeth (that are too small for my mouth apparently) the problem with this is that the proportions of my teeth would be way off, giving them the appearance of being short and stubby, so to couple this procedure a gum-lift has been recommended, I have a particularly gummy smile too, so this would fit nicely. However my top and bottom teeth also dont interlock (I forget the term, sorry) this means my canines are all worn down, and because they’d be sat next to 4 perfect teeth, these too would need work so that they’d fit in with my smile properly, crowns have been suggested for this.

All this work is well and good, but the cost is coming in at around £4000, which is a little bit of a hindrance for me.

any advice you can provide would be greatly helpful and appreciated. happy to provide photographs if necessary.

Thanks
