Q. I have Sjogrens and 3 of my teeth have crumbled and fallen out leaving parts of the teeth in the gum which the dentist will remove. What options do i have when it comes to rplacement teeth, the dentist says a bridge is out of the question. I have a NHS exception card

Q. Hi, I have just found out that my top right rear molar, is dying as a result of a deep filling, which is now beging to rest on the nerve of the tooth. The dentist has shown me the x-ray and said that as the root is so bent and not easily identifiable, he does not believe a root canal would be sucsessful. I have also had a bad expererience of root canal’s, where within months I had absess, and lost the tooth anyway. My dentist has said that my only option really is therefore too losse the tooth. My concern with this is that due to braces and overcrowding I had already had all my wisdom teeth removed and to loose this back tooth, I run the risk of my jaw bone disolving, there is already evidence of this on the x-ray following the wisdom extraction 3 years ago. I asked if there was any other options and he told me I would need splints and a crown which would cost about £2000. I am only 31 and worry that if I don’t make the right choice now it will be too late, I can’t afford £2000 for a tooth, but as it stands a booked for an extraction the week before xmas??!! Reading some of your other responses to questions indicate the crown can be placed over the tooth, can this not always be done? Any advise would be great. Thanks
A. hi many thanks for your enquiry, my advice would be to ask to be referred to an endodontist for a second opinion. THere are many teeth which general dentists just do not have the skill to treat. however an endodontist is highly experianced at root canal treatment and can give you an idea of whether they feel it can be treated and level of sucess. once the root canal treatment is done it is then best to crown the tooth.

Q. I have a bridge (top six teeth) with a broken/chipped tooth. I have had it repaired several times but the repair keeps breaking off. Basically it is non functional. Is there a way to remove my bridge and replace the chipped one or some other procedure to fix it permanently?

Q. I have a fractured back tooth. My dentist finds that the nerve is not infected and I agree because it is not sensitive to hot and cold and if the tooth isn’t touched it feels okay. However, my concern is that the tooth is sensitive when under pressure and I presume this is because any pressure allows movement, however small, of the fracture. At the moment I have a temporary crown in place, awaiting a permanent fitting. Would it be expected that when the gold crown is fitted that will stop the ability of the tooth to flex. Can anything be done underneath the crown to gain stability? Many thanks.
A. When teeth have cracks we can never be deinite about whether the nerve has been affected. Your dentist sounds as though he is doing the correct thing for you. You may still need nerve treatment on the tooth if the tooth does not settle down

Q. Hello i had root canal treatment not long back – i ate something hard and chewy and part of my tooth has come off – its very painful , there is still some tooth there will the pain go away ? and is there any way i could save the tooth
A. Back teeth following root treatment are usually crowned to prevent splitting of the tooth. It is likely that the piece of tooth you have broken is still attached at the gum level and this is what is causing you pain. If this is so the dentist should be able to remove the broken part of the tooth and to crown what is remaining

Q. If a child breaks a front tooth in half horizontally and you have the piece can it be reattached? What should be done with the broken tooth piece to preserve it and how long do you have to get it to the dentist?
A. I would keep it clean and safe and see your dentist as soon as possible as it can often be bonded back together.

A. Thanks for your enquiry, at a lot of practices, it is possible to apply for finance to spread the cost of your treatment. At many practices this can even be interest free, as you have been resident in the United Kingdom for more than three years, you should be able to make an application. I would expect you to have to provide both a proof of address and a proof of signtaure but I foresee no problems in qualifying to make an application. I hope this helps. Many Thanks.

Q. my 8 year old son has broken his tooth under the gum as a result of a collision playing football. He has visited the dentist who suggested that we just leave it but the tooth is becoming a bit wobbly. What is your advice on this one?

Q. I was born without incisor teeth but the eye teeth grew in where the incisors should be. On the left side there is no gap for an incisor to go and on the right side, the gap is very small. My incisor teeth are right next to my front teeth. How do I get these teeth when there is no room in my mouth? what are my options?
A. You need to have a consultation the options would either be closing the residual spaces or opening the spaces and then adding 2 new teeth.

Q. Hi I had an accident on ll5 and a porcellain crown above I feel it trapped a nerve I had tooth removed and the pain went to ll4 strange….. Symptoms are: sucking sound, toxins, blockked ear and a popping ear on the swallow..nothing on xray or mri I would like to know if root treating the ll4 would help as it is sensitive to hot and cold drinks I don’t think it’s tmj as get toxins in mouth can you help me? Q. About 2 weeks ago, I was hit with a football. I experienced pain and noticed my tooth was loose in every way. Quickly, I braced my tooth using floss and other tooth on opposite side. I have not, and today used front teeth for anything. After a few days,I experienced no pain and sensitivity was reduced. Hot and cold has no effect. Considering that I have very good teeth, 8 or 9 days later, I knew something wasn’t right. I went to my local emergency dental clinic. After the Dr. evaluated x-ray, he said I did the right thing (bracing). The “right part” of root on my lower incisor is cracked. He noticed no inflammation. He wants me to keep bracing and schedule appt. with my Dentist in 2-3 weeks. He said to look 4 color change and on that later appt. with my Dentist, they will run test… Can you please explain the test? Also, I know teeth are (avascular), what is it that I’m hoping for? I’m so upset and fear the worst. If needed, regardless price, I will have to get an implant asap. Please explain how my tooth may be saved? Thank you
A. It really depends on where the tooth has fractured if it looks like it needs to be replace an implant is the best procedure, make sure you find a good dentist who does a lot of implants.

Q. i have very brittle teeth partly because of not taking care of them as a child. they constantly break and even start cutting into my gums and tongue. my dentist says he cant remove them and needs to save them. do i have no other choice than a slow rebuilding process or can i just get them removed for dentures?
A. If you want your teeth removed you can have that done but it is very aggressive and dentures will never be as good as your own teeth.

Q. Hi some of my top teeth are breaking down and the fragments have black on the inside what could cause this type of thing and why has it not affected my bottom teeth?

Q. Hi, last year my 10 year old son fell and broke his front top tooth abouth half way. We took him to the dentist who built the tooth back up. He had no problems for the first 9 to 10 months but recently he has been getting pain in his tooth. We took him back to see his dentist ( a different one as the first one had left the practise ) and they said that he needs root canal surgery. I asked if there was another alternative to this and was just given a no! Just wondering if you could give me any other options which could possibly be done. Thanks.
A. Hi, thanks for your e-mail, it is not unusual when a tooth has suffered a trauma in the way that your son’s has, for the nerve to die. In the process of the nerve dying, a patient will often suffer some quite severe pain although this is not always the case. Once this happens, the only treatment available to save the tooth in root canal therapy. This process involves removing all the infection from the root canal, then cleaning and filling it. Q. hi i have some very bad broken off teeth and their decaying. i have had an abcess for three days now but i went to the dr and got penicillin i plan to have the tooth removed in a week or so. but my question is this the pain in my tooth has been pretty bad i started takeing the meds yesterday the penicillin and they gave me hydrocodone 5/500 the pain has eased off but today when i woke up i noticed that a part of chin has a numb sensation about it i can feel when i touch it but it just dont feel right what could be causeing this? its got me really worried thanks.

The cause of your numbness is compression of the nerves in that part of your face due to an abscess on your tooth. Once this swelling has gone your sensations should return to normal. Q. A NHS dentist at a previous check up recommended that I have small fillings put in 4 of my bottom front teeth to stop them chipping further. However, I have dental insurance with a private dentist from whom I have had rout canal treatment carried out on other teeth and he advised me that this would not be a good idea. My teeth are not painful and the chips are not very noticable. I am slao in my fifties.
A. If you do not need to get this done for pain or function and you dont think it will improve your teeth aesthetically then I would not get it done.
