I Have Been Told I Need A Frenectomy. Could You Tell Me If This Procedure Is Necessary In My Case?

Q.
Is a libial frenectomy necessary before placing an implant in the front upper jaw? Or is the frenectomy necessary just for the sake of fitting a partial denture, as in my case? As my local dentist performed frenectomy, saying that it was very much essential before placing an implant. I have lost a single tooth at the front upper region. Kindly provide me some information about the frenectomy procedure and whether it’s essential before placing an implant?

Hello and thank you for getting in touch. The labial frenulum is the tag of skin that secures the upper lip to the gum above your upper front teeth, and sites in the mid-line. Usually this is located high above the gum line, but occasionally it can attach much further down toward the teeth, which can in turn cause issues when making dentures or placing implants as it gets in the way or can pull on the gum. In such cases where the frenulum interferes with a proposed treatment I would normally recommend a frenectomy, but this is by no means essential in every case. If a frenectomy is required it is a very simple and quick procedure and I normally carry these out with a small laser which simply releases the tissue. I really hope you find this helpful and I wish you the best of luck with your treatment. Regards, Dr Marcus Gambroudes.
